Best jack/wrench for spare wheel?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by PercyTheMexicanBay, May 31, 2020.

  1. Hi guys!
Bought our van just before xmas in a pretty good "ready to drive" state!

Had a look at our spare wheel this weekend and we need a jack and wrench for it. No good having a spare wheel if we cant change a flat at the roadside!

Anyone got any recommendations for a decent (and affordable) jack and other tools for changing a wheel? Eg is there a specific tool for taking off the hubcaps?

    Thanks!

Hubcaps, VWH, JK etc sell hubcap keys.

Id bet if you popped a wanted add on here, one would head your way (I have one somewhere but where, I don't know).

I've lost mine too, they're very looseable.

  4. If your jacking points are in good shape, the standard Brazilian scissor jack works fine.

Nuts - 1/2";monkey bar and a 19mm socket, those X shaped things are rubbish, wheel nuts need to be "quite tight".
Jack - too easy to find your jack either won't fit under with a flat or won't lift high enough to get the spare on. I don't know the answer, I travel with a full size 2 ton one but most people wouldn't want to.

As long as your hamdbrake works or you chock the wheels. @hailfrank an I trashed one into a twisty thing once when I wanted to unadjust my sticking shoes. Oops.

  9. You’d be delighted to find a Brazzy one fits nicely under the passenger seat

  10. We picked up a vw bilstein one at techenders..look a bit feeble but slots into the lifting point and gets it off the ground no bother..

  11. Trouble with the Bilsteins is they’re a bit...wobbly.

  12. That's where our spare wheel is! Mexican bus with a double passenger seat. Surprising amount of space under there!!

I got a Brazilian Jack from JK, fits in the void under the front seat pressing... a standard wheel brace is a waste of space, I've got a telescopic bar with a 19mm socket.

  14. Oh potentially. How much are you wanting for them?

NOT a 2 tonne bottle jack from a screwfix... it is too short when the tyres are up and too tall when you have a flat and unstable when used in combination with another jack... something that could end up with broken bones. That’s a story for another day!

sounds like good jacking points and a Brazilian Jack is order if the day.

  16. Worth having a practice with your new toy beforehand. Make sure it fits in the jacking holes - mine didn’t!

I’ve got a ford transit scissor jack in mine, fairly sturdy for a scissor jack with a wide foot and top pad, it won’t fit the jacking points (I’d never jack here anyway) but it’s good for lifting on the chassis.
