Battery going flat whilst left standing??

  1. Ive got a one year old starting Battery , how long would you electrical boys reckon it would take before it went flat if i dont use the van ,this time of year with just an immobilizer /light pulling ?? roughly ?? days?? weeks?? months ??. reason i ask is its under cover in carport but engine hatch is tight against garage at the back so if i put a charger on i cant keep van in dry at front and get to engine compartment , also if i leave it and it goes flat i cant easily push van out lol. Im looking at a solar panel trickle but just wondered what time span might be?? Standard Battery ?

  2. Around three weeks before you would be aware. Hook a fused cigarette lighter socket on to the battery. The socket can then sit anywhere in the front, trailing with the +ve terminal well covered with insulating tape just in case it finds exposed metal. Provided your battery was fully charged to start with a small solar panel in the right place might well compensate for the slow discharge. A few of the small panels come with a lighter plug as an option to small croc clips.

  3. fritts suggestion might work. Personally, I'd disconnect the battery - the quick release terminals work well.

You're likely aware that lead acid batteries don't like being fully discharged, and may not hold charge when you use them again.

  5. you could run a 2 core cable into the van.
or where ever you can get to it ,
from the battery, and then clip your batt charger on to this to charge..

  7. I leave my van parked up from mid October till march
I never do anything except pop the earth terminal off
Been ok for 3 yrs like that

  8. I've a towbar socket which wasn't wired to anything when the van was bought.

So I wired it directly to a battery (fused) and with a site connector keep the battery charged from a mains "Optimate" charger.

Can you not park the bus the other way round??

I'd be inclined to find out what's draining the battery or if there is anything draining it before resorting to removing the terminals if it's awkward to do so. Last thing you need and wee need to hear is that you've gone as got yourself trapped behind bus and car port. But if you do do that, make a film of it. £250 and a load of karma points

By the way an immobiliser will have no drain even with a flashing LED on it. I leave my bus parked up for about 3 months over November - January and January - March with an occasional start up here and there. The battery is now 3 years old and no problems.

  12. He's right.... An alarm unit will slowly run your battery down.

If the battery is flat in 7-10 days then I hardly think it'll be the immobiliser.

  15. unplug your phone charger

  16. If the battery goes flat just doesn't matter, as you put your feet through the floor to power it anyway dont you? Yabba Dabba Doooooo :)

on another note, Do you have a hook up with charger built it? maybe useful for charging if its dead, Also if the battery is discharging over 7 - 10 days you've got quite a drain going on, bung a meter in circuit and check the drain.

  18. Don't forget to disconnect the clock on the dash if you have one.
