What year is it do you know?I have never seen a solid bulkhead behind the seats. Was this common? Are the front seats bucket or bench.?
Miss Rosie, yes the bus was built in late december 1976. A solid bulkhead was quite common as far as I know. At least for my type of bus, a Kombi. And as usual a Kombi has a 2+1 front seat configuration. A normal driver's chair and a bench for two passengers with room for a spare tire under it. Maybe the UK market was different?
Spotmatic....my bus was also built in December 76 but had two bucket seats with no bulkhead and a walk through.I did own an ex Aust Army kombi about 20 years ago which had a front bench seat.Still regret selling it!
Not much to mention, but we are busy overhauling the 1600cc AS twin port motor. As can be seen on the photos 10 year old oil is not much good It appears that there's almost no play in the crankshaft. So that's good. Now to fit some new seals, pushrod pipes, valve springs... And have the thing started for the first time in 10 years. Interestingly, honing marks can still be seen in the cylinders. No idea why...
Lucky find #2: I managed to buy a complete new window rubber & lid seal set (I already had the A quality door seals) from an owner who had them in the cupboard for years, but never used. On top of that I also got a set of new chrome front light trims (rings) for free. And what's funny: most of the rubbers seem to originate from Alan Schofield in the UK, even though I'm based in Holland and the seller is from Holland too. (There's also the odd item from Wolfsburg West).
And it runs! After 10 years of sitting idle next to the bus. The exhaust is a temporary one of course.
Thanks! Not much to tell really, other than that the bus will get a paint job (inside and out) in 4 weeks Also I cleaned the CU gearbox before replacing the oil seals. It's not like new now but it's certainly good enough! To prevent "whitening" of the aluminium casing I "impregnated" it with WD40. Don't know yet if I'll paint the gearbox. Before: After:
Thank you! It's going to be two tone: L90D (pastel white) top and L50K (neptune blue) body. Not historically correct but what the heck.. Example picture stolen from the web (although it's hard to discern the difference between dove blue and neptune blue on web photos):
I bought one in Zwolle in 1985 to travel round Europe in,same solid bulkhead,we needed a bench seat as there were three of us,left UK in May got back in October, sold it to an kiwi on the south bank & made a profit happy days
Living just 12kms from Zwolle that's a great story to read. Any pictures to share of the bus back then (and maybe also Zwolle for that matter)?
I bought the bus in a place called Heerde,a friend of mine new a girl in Hattem hence how we got the bus,I say Zwolle as its a city, lovely part of the world, went fishing in Kampen a few years back on the Eisle river
