Back end of a late bay

Discussion in 'Late Bay Parts Classifieds' started by Lime79, Jul 31, 2012.

  1. I'm considering a trailer project made up of the back end of a late bay (from the rear of the sliding door to the rear quarter) with a front clip welded up front sitting on a trailer chassis. Anyone got a rear end of a bay????

  2. Could you not buy the separate panels you want new and weld these to the chassis?

  4. I did think of that but wasn't sure of structural integrity and where I get a roof panel. I've seen front clips for around £400 and I was hoping to find a project or front ended bay to have cut and then welded to front clip. THought that might work out less cost wise. Stuart - would a tow bar fit with the CSP python form your memory of being under the bus???

It might be a bit touch and go because of one of the mounts used for your exhaust. But a tow bar like mine would work because it pulls the bumper and main tow bar away from the body.

This could be the one you need.

  9. Fair points, well made as usual Stuart :) I'll have a look on eBay for a trailer base etc. I guess it would be easy to fabricate a frame to attach all the bay panels too although I wonder if it's possible to get the engine lid plus panel above welded together and then to drop down like a pickup???

I'll ask Gary tomorrow what he can de regarding welding all this together.

A few braces here and there would do the actual body frame. I had a look on eBay to see what trailers were available. Some might work but it's axel that might cause a problem with those Porsche wheels. The garage I work in have made 2 monster Golfs so anything is possible :)

  11. Cool, thanks Stuart. Have scoured the web and have loads of pics of people who've made trailers from Bays and there is one on eBay currently but for sale with a Camper as well for £23k!!! Maybe there's a gap in the market???

  12. They do come up and sadly one near me was scrapped a couple of weeks ago. Car cheaper to just buy panels and clad over a frame, just my 2p worth

  13. Ok the project sort of begins!

I've sourced a late bay tow bar which I collect tomorrow. I'm looking at trailer chassis' as I write and I've located all the panels that (I think) I need however can't find a roof for love nor money so - can one be fabricated????

  14. the good thing with a back end is that you have two spare wheels/battery ,you could leave the engine in as well ,just in case...

    I had one... ;D

  17. Lime79 do yyou have a build thread or readers ride thread on your bus ?

  18. Damn. :) Ive a tow bar you couldve had. Especially if you'd had 5.5 x 15 steels. :)
Hmm, might need to have a look at your tow bar as the one I've got fouls my CSP Python exhaust. The fitter has taken it to a mate to see if he can re-weld the swan neck attachment 45 degrees round the tow bar but if not then I'm looking for another one - you got any photos???
