Aussie import meets UK weather

  1. My 1973 Westie needs some attention. She was imported 10 years ago and mechanically is purring (fingers crossed!) on her Type 4 2 ltr engine. We've had some great family holidays and the grandkids love her so this is a long term thing. The problem is that her once perfect body work has started to bubble in the last couple of years. Its on most panels now and in all the usual problem areas. I'm in awe of the stories of restorations on this site but know that I have neither the skill or the space to tackle it myself. I have a VW mechanic whose dad looked after my Devon Moonraker in the 1980s he tells me that she' 20150615_195518.jpg s structurally still sound but he no longer does bodywork and I've tried and failed to find anyone locally. Can anyone recommend someone in the Merseyside area who they have used?

  2. As above ,Duncan is one of us

  3. If it's still sound I wouldn't worry. Just get the shiny stuff done when you can afford it but find someone who knows their stuff.

  4. If you find anywhere else other than @sundialcampersspecalist ask here before committing to a body shop you won't get an open reply as everybody's option varies ,some people have had bad jobs done but the liable law's prevent certain things being posted on an open forum

  5. Thanks for that suggestion and all your comments. Macclesfield is not too far away. I've been taking at look at Dunc's Facebook page. Obviously I'd like somewhere down the road where I can watch over my pride and joy.
I have hung on for a couple of years but its just got worse. I could just carry on watching and waiting but having had a bay before and watched it crumble I'd rather know why this one is bubbling and whether it needs more than a paint job in some places. I've finally been able to rent a big enough garage so once the work is done she'll be indoors from now on.
I know its hard to give advice on an open forum. Perhaps if I list any other possible suggestions you can give a :) or a :(?

  8. Happy to give another personal recommendation for Dunc @SundialCamperSpecialists. He’s doing paint and a few other bits and bobs for me just now. Reliable and honest would be my take on him. I spotted he worked on a very rusty T25 round the corner from me and it’s transformation was remarkable - there’s a thread on here somewhere about it. Your bus is nowhere near as bad as that one though. I’m from your neck of the woods originally and there was a bloke I used in Wallasey but he packed in years ago. I’m not aware of others. Good luck, nice bus :)

  10. Thanks Bob I’ve now spoken to Dunc and got the ball rolling by sending him some photos. I think the guy in Wallasey is the legendary Frank Burscough at VolksWirral and it’s his son Tom who looks after my van at the same workshop in Wallasey. I wouldn’t be able to run it without Tom. Frank is retired but he kindly fine tuned my twin carbs at Tom’s request last year after the AA had messed them up.
Thanks for your help guys it’s taken a huge weight off my mind.
