What an incredible life this guy had, probably should be more famous than Armstrong and Aldrin, the series , The Right Stuff was brilliant about the Mercury space program.
What an inspiration he was - I remember listening to the radio in 1962 hearing about him being the first American to orbit the Earth. And then in 1998 he became the oldest astronaut when he went up in the space shuttle - he must have been fit at 77. RIP
Mentioned it before, but "Nasa Triumph and Tragedy" is well worth watching on the YouTube. Considering the risks involved (especially the early flights), these fellows had b*lls the size of coconuts.
I graduated from John H Glenn high school in New York back in the 80s. We used to call it Ronald Reagan high school because it was 99% white. .
RIP bet he didn't expect to live to 95 when he set out being an astronaut. There was a good prog about the space race (I love that phrase) on sun night. They were interviewing a Russian who I think was the first person to go out into space. He seemed to find it all funny
