Arthur's gearbox woes

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by yorkshirecampers, Nov 7, 2011.

  1. Just had a nasty call from Arthur's garage after he's spent some significant time on the ramp today. Excuse the non-technical explanation...and anything I get wrong...these are my rushed notes from the conversation.

Engine, out, took clutch off flywheel to discover the clutch has basically disintegrated and thoroughly worn down to the plate which is totally in pieces. Apparently this is some significant feat - in 30 years of VW mechanics he's only ever seen this once before.

The bearing inside the main shaft running from the gearbox through the clutch to the flywheel has completely disintegrated.

There is damage to the flywheel that *could* be salvageable but most likely not

    Oil leaking round seal

All teeth stripped off the main diff on one of the gears (bit rushed this bit, can't read my own writing)

Something with the inner drive shaft??

And to top it off there's a slight crack to my starter motor.

    Big, big, big sigh.

And I'm very poor, having just paid for the upholstery :'( And it's nearly Pascale's 16th, and Christmas, and, and, and, and!!!!

So any and all help you can give on sourcing a new gearbox would be really great. the JK ones are cheaper but on back order, and so I'm looking at this one at VW Heritage http://www.vwheritage.com/vw_spares_Gearbox-T2-1600-CU-code-76-79-Inc-£200-Schg_act_shop.product_pID_16863598_lang_EN_country_GB.htm?crumbPageToLoad=1

It's times like these I wish I had emergency gin stashed in my office.

I was quoted £350 to rebuild my gearbox at a place in Rochdale which was recommended by the mechanic who does the work on my van - and that's a 2 litre one.

I could get some more details if you like - I'm still thinking about it because mine is serviceable at the moment.

I'm sure someone on here will have an idea who it is and whether they are any good (or shoot me down in flames - see if I care! ) :)

Mind you that eBay one is cheap!

  5. I had mine rebuilt as you dont know what you are getting with an ebay/2nd hand one. it may of been drag raced for all you know.
At least with sending yours of to a specialist you know where it came from and how its been used (to a degree).
They will also give you a 12 month warentee.

The heritage one the one bonus is that you will get your discount.

Will take it from 730+VAT to 695+VAT

Also comes with the 12 month warranty

  7. Thanks Anna, had forgotten about the discount so that's really, really handy.

I don't think rebuilding ours is an option - far too much damage to far too many pieces. In fact I was pretty much writing off getting the surcharge back as i doubt they would be able to do anything with it.

Cheers for the ebay link Woody - can't get on at work (booo) but will check tonight.

  8. What box is it (or what engine is it?). Got shut of all my spare engines and boxes (undersold most of em when I was skint).

If funds dont allow then go for a 2nd hand box but spose you take your chances.

  10. Fairy fluff. Prices seem high for 2nd hand stuff tbh.

  11. Good luck with whatever route you take hun

Your bus will be like triggers broom soon lol but so will mine

  12. gutted for you mate! :( At least you have a garage man you can trust so you know when its done its done right! :)

Hmm..it would be if it were from a late bay. The mountings are different. - worth asking the seller - could be a crossover which will work.
