Does anyone tow a caravan behind their bay? I've a late bay (surprise surprise!), with a stock 1600 engine. Caravan I'm looking at has a Max weight of 685kg Can't afford a 2l lump and wondering how the 1600 would perform? Cheers
My mate towed his Eriba Puck around Holland Germany and back through Belgium this with his 1600 no problems, Steve,
Hmm.. sorry it ain't stock! Not sure how I forgot that!!! Twin 36 carbs and an aftermarket exhaust.. cannot remember which one. Think when the carbs were set up it reached high 70s bhp on the rolling road. Pretty sure it had a kadron exhaust on it then which I've now replaced. I know it ain't gonna go like a rocket... but wondering just how bad it could be?? Guess temp is an issue too?? Thanks
Why do you want to go even slower and even lower on the mpg? @pkrboo tows a puck with a 2 litre and I'm pretty sure 55mph and 18mpg is what he gets?
We don't all fit easily in the camper, actually we don't fit at all! There's four of us, the caravan sleeps four. Also is light enough to be towed by our mk4 golf, so could use it at Halloween whilst our campers off the road. I bought a towbar for the golf today to use with a bike rack... it got me looking at what I could tow with both the golf and bay
Your camper will still fly with the twin carbs... the 1600 stock will only preform good towing the caravan down hills...
Yes defo, I thought so too. Reputable place though and highly recommended. He certainly set the engine up well... took his time though!
i bought a tiny fiberglass caravan from the 70s a trident companion . more of a project to spend some time on , got is as it has a braked chasis, wouldnt like to tow in the van without a braked trailer , will be ok on very short trips without hills i think, any more and the poor bog standard 1600 engine woild let me know it doesnt like it .
Happy days although it ain't a stock 1600 then I'd say regardless of the carbs. They were 50bhp when they left the factory....
Sorry TBR but you've been conned, that's not a Puck your towing but one of them there VW camper things. Another drunken eBay purchase I suspect
I thought it was a bit big for a Puck. This one does 70 mph (downhill) and about 20 mpg if you stick to 55. It also does over 90 mph on the back of my Jeep, I have a ticket from near @lost-en-france to prove it.
I pulled a Puck with stock 1600. A bit slower but quite manageble with a loss of about 3mpg. Now have a new 1641 with twin webers on board. Has made it livelier but not vastly. Have done France 3 times so far with no problems.
Cheers everyone. Think the Puck is a little lighter, what I'm looking at has a max of 685kg. Then considering the four of us, plus God only knows what camping gear seems to be thrown in the van for just a weekend... perhaps it is pushing it a little too much! Hmm??? Then do I actually want a caravan to tow behind the golf, kinda makes the bay a little pointless then... and I don't really like caravans! Thanks for all advice though, guess I've got to have a proper think. As for rolling road and bhp figures, yes I agree I thought it was a little high too. Pretty certain it's a stock top end too. I'll try to dig out the print out he gave me, though I think I lost it! @Top Banana Racing - I'd look twice if I saw you towing the other bay on the road - awesome!
I'm thinking of getting this to tow behind the pickup http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Coventry-...o-Airstream-/231708362504?hash=item35f2e50708
