Anyone run there bus without heat exchangers

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by mi2itsdl, Oct 4, 2011.

  1. My heating does not work at the moment. No cables fitted to operate it !!

However, as I have only just got it, I have never used it in the winter, so I have no idea how good/poor the heating is !!

Anyway planning on having a bigger engine fitted and don't know whether to go all out and have merged headers with no heat exchangers or a system that allows them.

Any views on with or without heating ??

    Cheers,

    Simon

i've got no heating matey, no pipes no fan no exchangers nothing. some of the tin has been removed too, bus runs fine but i imagine it's gonna be cold this winter.

  3. Took mine off and sold them. Got stainless j tubes.
All worked fine but I planned to put a heater in anyway so I could warm the bus when the engine isnt running making the existing system redundant.
I've got some tubing and a flap mechanism to plumb the heater into the existing pipework to get warm air to the front.
i bought a propex heater but probably would have gone for an eberspacher knowing what I know now.
Havent plumbed it all in yet but winters coming!
I'll post up some pics when i get it in

A decent set of heat exchangers with the flaps setup prperly and all the pipework done well gives good performance, once it's warmed up..

  4. you can still run heat exchangers with a merged header if you want to keep your heating unless your building a big engine that needs larger bore j tubes and header. a eberspacer connected to heater tube would be ace warm up the van and melt the van before you get in in a morning. i wouldnt want to run another bay over winter without heating used to be ice on inside of screen thicker than the out! i used to put the westy cooker on for 15 min to thaw the windows before we set of

  5. Looks like a cold winter ahead then.
As a newbee whoose bus is also less these bits the info is really helpfull

  6. Im running J-tubes too, if your running the bus all year round its gonna be a PITA clearing the front windscreen when cold n damp and you really should fit a Propex or simular. Tho if like me your a summer pussy lol then it isnt an issue.

    Just

  7. I dont bother with heating it just gets in the way when Im trying to work on it. Saying that I dont use it in the winter. But if I did i think it would be a nightmare without heat.

  8. We are gonna fix the heating, after a trip to cornwall this summer (mrs complaining of being cold) I cable tied the pods open, shame the sun shone all the way home and we were too hot! It gets so hot and the totem is almost too hot to touch. I reckon with it all renewed will work fine, even the kids in the back are too warm, I say fix it and keep it! Shame the new heatyer pods are 45 quid each.

And keep the fresh air vents too, makes a nice mix of fresh and heated air!

  10. Dont have them, don't need them.
I was told they are poo anyway.
But it won't get used much in winter and if it goes I will get a little 12v heater.
Not to fussed. I weirdly like the cold a bit...

The westy has excellent heating, our cables have seized so we cable tied them fully open, works superb, the van gets toasty throughout!

  13. i have no heating in my van as i smoothed the dash off belive me some heating is better than none stick with them

  14. 'j' tubes on the type 4 for me. Yes it gets cold - we dress warm and eat beans if we use the van in the winter. You have to drive with the windows open too to keep the screen clear
    :)

  15. Believe me, you're going to freeze, mate. And your screen will mist up.

If you've got a type 1 engine with good original heat exchangers, they'll blast heat out if the end-to-end system is in good shape. Easy enough to replace the cables. Repro exchangers don't put out so much heat, but still provide some warmth.

There's no earthly reason to run without them. You can still have a 4-into-1 exhaust.
