Anyone on here know anything about creating a website?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by burntout, Jan 9, 2014.

  1. Need to set up a website for the business, anyone know how to, or able to point me in the right direction?

Would like to have a go at it myself as funds are tight at the moment, is this a silly idea?

    Thanks.

  2. whats the website for? Just a leaflet site for you to point customers towards or a website to generate leads? If its the latter then you will need a lot of website optimisation for the search engines which is best left to the professionals. If its just a leaflet site then iWeb on a mac is an easy and professional website design and hosting program but you can only have one domain name.

  3. http://www.webs.com

there are loads of sites like this for easy set up....they look ok and you can always upgrade later..there is a lot of bullMarmite and high prices talked about web...

  4. For my business I use 123reg website builder programme cost me about £120 a year plus domain name (I think). They have a number of templates which you can customise and I have done it all myself, I found it relatively easy.

I havent a clue about the SEO side of things as it's more a website that I point people towards rather than one to generate online leads.

  5. I use a company called freestart, quite cheap and it's self editing on their website easy to do too!
They have a lot of packages that start from basic upwards would recommend.

  7. As @icepug pointed out....decide what the website is for....an online 'flyer' with clickable contact details, and a bit of general info can be knocked up in about an hour....a full on site with multiple pages, animations, video links, shopping basket, booking forms etc. is obviously more involved. There are thousands of free site building hosts, many of which use standardised templates where you upload your own pics, change fonts and texts....others provide a blank canvas, with prescribed code to enable you to do stuff similar to what you see on here (links, buttons, search etc.) Others allow you to change code to allow you to fully customize how your site works...

Tell us a bit more about your business and you will get some more specific recommendations

I built mine, but Dean on here designed most of it. I did it with a 30 day trial of adobe muse. Knackered now though when I want to update it.

  11. I'd say 90% of people are best of using word press or tumblr.

Then buy a domain and point it at the site.

The www.wisemangoeswild.co.uk site costs £2 a year to run.

  12. ^this. Depends what you want, but Wordpress is a good start.

  13. Thanks everyone for your replies, and my sincere apologies for not explaining myself better or replying sooner - had a few things going on since I posted.

Site would just be for people to see what we do and have contact details on for the moment, no need for a shop etc.

Will have a look at what you kind people have suggested and the links and go from there!

We already have a domain name, so just need to work out to create a site to link to it!

  14. I am a former web designer and happy to help if I can. If it's a brochure site then that can be done quite easily - what is the business about? What domain have you registered and who did you register it with? If you want some design / layout help let me know. I don't use any software packages as I write all source code and my artwork is done using photoshop. Let me know...ps my services are free to a fellow TLBer.
