As I've done the rest of our new bathroom and I'm tight I thought maybe I could lay the floor, now I've finally chosen a floor type :)

I've got 18" x 18" tiles. I already laid 6mm ply but need to pick up adhesive tomorrow.

Any handy hints gratefully accepted :)

This is practice dry laying, not cut in proper places yet, I just wanted to see what it would look like :)

I'm going to take that as a compliment! Our previous bathroom suite was brown with yellow walls and a couple of layers of tiles :).

I couldn't decide on flooring as was tempted to go cheapest as we've spent a flipping fortune on new kitchen and bathroom. However, as Sarah reminded me we have spent it so no point making bathroom look odd with cheapo floor.

Hence I'm trying to save money by doing it myself. I realise it may turn into false economy hence I'm after handy hints from folk more skilled than myself :)

Hope you're having a good Easter Zed :)

Not really, the ruddy Christians have shut all the supermarkets and I didn't realise until I got to the first one.
Cushion flooring for me, that looks cold and hard.

    I think they've got a hidden agenda :)

Yes, I'm a bit worried it's going to be hard under foot. I was v tempted by carpet tiles. I think if I lived alone they would be my top choice.

  6. Lovely. Can't beat a good bathroom. Might I suggest painting the walls something warmer...?

  7. If you end up with a rough edge around the shower tray, get some 40mm x 4mm window trim from your local plastics supplier and silicon it to the tray....it's gloss white, hides a multitude of sins, and if you run a finger of white silicon over the join you can't tell it there.! If it were me I would be whipping out the bog, the basin unit and bath panel, and anything else that was in the way...trial fit to make sure your have no small cuts that spoil the look, and use adhesive that allows time for adjustment once the tile is laid....might be worth trimming the bottom of the architrave and sliding the tile under rather than trying to cut around...looks a lot neater. Try not to get a tile join where the ply has a join . Get that ply screwed down at 100mm centres too....will stop any movement.

  8. Used to use ball adhesives, was market leader, theres different ones for different materials ie f10 f44 etc. They can advise you which is best for your application

  10. Looks a top job fella, when you've finished go around the perimeter in clear silicone (fine nozzle ) oh and always use a sharp blade on the cutting of the tiles (safely) and take your time !
    Job done !

"Hard under foot" man up woman, we have varnished floorboards.
No form of carpeting should ever be used in a bathroom FACT

Thank you for your helpful advice folks. :)
@The Bobdogs fortunately I laid the shower tray on sand/cement so has enough around the edge to put the tiles under. Luckily the bath panel is a two parter so I only put it together once I had a tile sample so it's set at a height for tiles to go under.
Good suggestion on architrave as I was dreading doing the cuts around it!!

I've got a few joints in the ply. One lot as I forgot to open the isolating valves under the floor when I fitted the bathroom rad!!

I shall ask in a flooring shop for best way to fill any ply joints.

I was planning to shift loo and sink unit - tho how far depends on how fed up I get with it :)

  14. I too know the pain and self loathing of opening the rad valve......and nothing happens. The dawning of the realization that lurking under the freshly laid floor are a pair of shiny new iso valves set firmly in the 'off' position. You are not alone!

:) you know I'm just a softy Southern Jessie :). Carpet in a bathroom is ok in a bathroom/loo when there are no gents in the house as no risk of "accidents' :)
