    afternoon all,
I'm getting confused over the naming used for fasteners...
Basically I want some 5 or 6mm x 20mm countersunk stainless wood screws and stainless cup washers for the same.
    Is M5 5mm?
    What about No. 10?
I also need some 4mm x 25mm flat head wood screws.
If I understood what "M" or "No." was, my search would probably be easier...
    Cheers

  2. format is M6x12 etc where MX is the diameter in mm and the second part is the length in mm. Head nomenclature varies so do your googling to find what you want, ie cap head machine screw etc

    Thanks Gents!
So if I ordered M5x20 screws, I'd need 5mm cup washers?

  5. you don't buy wood screws based on an M number like you do bolts, screws are usualy something like 4 x 100mm, 6 x 100mm or 8 x 100mm, the second number is the length the first number is the head size in mm

  6. also the length is to the tip of the screw, so if screwing through 15mm board, with a cup, youd want 25mm min

  7. For flat head screws eg not countersunk heads try searching Pan head
Machined M5 etc, are threaded like nuts and bolts
No. screws are wood screws. For little things use 4's or 6's . 10's and 12's are the sort used for screwing bits of 4x2 and alike together.

    Cheers all
Think I'll head down to a local fasteners place in the morning so I don't end up with bags of bits I can't use!

  9. they may come in handy for the nursery....or fixing stuff when the little 'un starts swinging on things....;)

  10. Screwfix are quite good for wood screws, if you know what size you want. B&Q will charge you £3 ish for 25/30. Screwfix will sell you a box of 100 for less. Again depending on size.

  11. Woodscrews are old Imperial sizes, I think. Unlike metric, the numbers don't relate to size, as far as I'm aware. Self-tapping screws are also similar in sizing to woodscrews, although you can get metric ones.

  13. Who else finds the work "shank" mildly arousing?

WHS... but the mistake I always make is that the screw number for wood screws is completely alien to what you thin kit is!! a number 6 screw is significantly smaller than 6mm.

Screwfix tend to list them by number, B&Q tend to list them by the mm.

Odd when you consider there part of the same company
