With multigrade oil, the first number is the viscosity of the oil when it's cold - 10 weight is thinner than 15 weight which is thinner than 20 etc. The second number is the viscosity when the oil gets hot. The idea of multigrade is that it's not too thick when starting and the weather is cold, but is still thick enough when the weather is hot and you're running up a big hill.

Your 10/40 is a step thinner cold and hot than 20/50. So better lubrication at start up, slightly better economy (lower pumping losses) but less protection when it gets really hot. Since you live near Birmingham, really hot shouldn't be an issue, but if you decide to go on safari in Africa, try the 20/50.

Also, the thickness of oil when it's hot is important because oil temperature is only half of the consideration. You also need oil PRESSURE. If you use too thin an oil, you don't get the required pressure of oil pumping around your engine.

The problem with air cooled is getting even cooling, so you tend to get hot spots. The more BHP/litre you try and get, the bigger the problem. I still love the simplicity of air cooled - I've had a couple of air cooled Citroens, air cooled bikes (still got one) and now the van. Knocking out the cooling system has its problems, but it makes for easy maintenance and less things to go wrong.

The problem with air cooled is getting even cooling, so you tend to get hot spots.

I think it was the type 4 1700, specifically in a bus application, that would get major overheating at #1 as it didn't achieve adequate cooling. Hence the importance of having all the correct tins in place to ensure the airflow is directed to the designed cooling channels
