alternator voltage regulator

I have a 3 pin regulator - can this be rigged to suit a type 2 1600 alternator? The regulator I have is df, d+ and d- but the wiring diagram shows a 4 pin regulator?

Depends on the alternator as most have a built in reglater and numbers on it.

 

mine doesn't. VWH website shows a 3 pin VR but not how to wire it when a 4 pin is required?

If you join the blue wire that goes to the dash light to the big red D+ wire it should work
