Hi all. First post here, so please be gentle I should precede this post with "I probably haven't got a chuffing clue what I'm talking about, so you may have to read between some lines here and there", but here goes... The choke has gone kaput on my van (1.8l, '74 T2) and I am having a nightmare trying to find a replacement for it. It's type 4 engine with Solex carbs on it. I bought a replacement choke element on eBay and it turns out that it's a different size to mine; about 40mm instead of the 54mm diameter one that I need. Oh yeah, and the old choke is in the bin lorry heading to landfill as we speak, so no chance of bodging it back together. Would anyone have any smart ideas where I could source a replacement one from? I've tried JustKampers, Eurocarb, Cool Air, Mega Bug, VWHeritage, Retro Dubs/z, Cuthbert Dibble and Grubb, but am just getting a big fat 'No' from everyone (story of my life ). Please help a man in need. I'm supposed to be taking my 3 year old lad away in a couple of weeks and don't want to explain to him that, yet again, Daddy's broken the van because he thinks that, without a modicum of engineering nous, training or common sense, he's had another crack at the oily bits and has ballsed it up.
I got replacement chokes for my replacement solex twin carbs from CB performance in the states the chokes are cheap postage is a bit of a killer, the chokes from my original solex's fitted the new ones so i'm guessing yours are the same maybe worth a phone call to to them just to confirm. http://www.cbperformance.com/default.asp PS don't forget they are handed left and right, although if ordering probably worth getting at least one 1 of each.
Mine broke too. I just removed all the choke bits and bobs. I don't run the van through winter, so haven't really noticed much of a difference. Just needs the throttle blipping at junctions for the first few minutes. I'd save your money
Thanks Major (feel like I should salute you in some way?) Just had a (quick) look through the site and it looks as though they only stock the 34mm ones, which are the wrong'uns. But will give them a call to see if it's something they might have on a shelf somewhere.
That's what I am doing at the moment, but he's a temperamental little bugger and I don't like giving him excuses to play up! I can just imagine we'll get 150+ miles away and it'll grind to a halt!
Just make sure you take out the actual 'choke' plate (part 20 in the pdf) and not just the electric element. Otherwise you'll be running with the choke on all the time. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/solex_34_pdsit_2_3/Solex_34_PDSIT_2_3_Carburetor.pdf
Good point, thanks. He's parked at my sisters at the moment as I'm barrowing stuff in and out of the garden for the next week, so will pop over again and take a look at getting that out. Would you think it's fine to run with the element off and nothing covering where it was? My lack of knowledge says it would leave it open to all sorts of Marmitee getting in?
Just had a quick look on there, but no results for 'Choke', 'Solex' or 'Type 4' will try giving them a ring tomorrow, cheers
its a one man business ,be patient he's very good.He sent me a door lock and wouldn't take payment until I was sure it was the correct one
Excellent, will definitely give him a go. Wish there were more people who did things that way! Had a number of disinterested companies about this! "nah mate, you ain't getting one of them" etc etc
I believe the 34mm is the throat? size of the carb not the choke size. Oh, and as poptop says, Welcome to the forum!
Some new ones on German ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Starter-S...200878?hash=item2cbe0ec86e:g:8UcAAOSwHMJYOzac
