Alcohol minimum pricing!!

  1. when living, as i did in Germany, it was a legal requirement , if stopped by the police , for you to show/prove you had the financial means to get youself home or you could be nicked .one thing about that country, the cops did enforce all the laws , some of the ones i initially thought petty, were in fact well thought out for benefit of all.best social thing i found? people were of the opinion that it was very uncool to be drunk on the streets.

  2. I am saving my pennies for this:

140 pints of hoppy loveliness for £0.20 per pint.

  3. ^^^ whats that per unit of alcohol, about 7p, well below the minimum level our nannying government has set

I'm guessing this will have zero impact on most people's drinking habits.

I keep hearing that supermarkets are too cheap, I don't agree I think pubs are too expensive, they're cutting their own throats by charging to much, two more closed down this week near me

  7. Supermarkets are cheap because they can afford to off-set lower prices on booze by people buying other items when they're in the store.

Pubs have a small range of drinks etc to sell to cover their costs - rent, business rates, wages, utilities, insurance, etc.

It's the same reason that that book on Amazon is probably cheaper than in somewhere like WH Smiths. Economies of scale, too.

Pubs make bugger all on a pint, it's the breweries and Gov who get rich from pubs, not the landlord.

  10. Whenever anything like this comes along, it seems that they want to look like they're doing something to tackle the problem, but without cutting off the stream of revenue they get through taxing the product, in this case alcohol. So they will cause a few people to reduce or stop drinking - and then the figures will be massaged to show what a fantastic thing it is they have done - but the bottom line is that most people's drinking habits will not change - it'll just mean more money to the supermarkets and more money to the government.

  12. I spend my working life in pubs ;D ;D Its me job

As regards the price of beer take a look into the beer duty escalator ... this is a mechanism by which the tax on beer increases annually at a rate of 2% above the rate of inflation. (from memory has increased duty by just over 40% in past few years) This is part of the reason for high beer prices in pubs. I quizzed my MP about this last week and the government state the revenue from this forms part of their budget ... they wont back down.

just to clear it up, as regards payments etc in pubs, some typically the larger ones will be run by the brewery under management so the manager gets a wage and possibly a bonus.

Others will be owned by and run by an individual, and the third group are those owned by a brewery/private indiviaual/property company and the person in there is on a lease. These operators of typically smaller pubs generally get their money from the profits of the business.

Supermarkets price alcohol low ... loss leaders often at cost or less to get customers in ... they have massive buying power.

  13. Putting a minimum price per unit will not solve the problem, I am a Taxi driver and see people drinking a couple a bottles of wine before they come out and hit the clubs, we actually pick drunks up and bring them into town and young girls are the worst.
It should be the cheap "loss leaders" that should be targeted.
Also if any emergency service is employed to sort out a drink related problem then an invoice should be given to that person to pay for that service.
I also agree that other than designated areas a ban should be imposed on drinking in public areas, you wouldn't believe how many morons try to get into my Taxi with a full glass of beer or wine, "I won't spill it" they never get the chance to prove themselves right.
I liked the days when dogs were allowed in pubs an kids were kept outside Halycon days and dreams

The Wilkinson Christmas catalogue landed on my mat and in side are wine and beer making kits for only 20 of your English pounds.

How many TLB Brewer's will we have.

  16. On question time last night, someone mentioned if the drinking problem was still a problem why not get rid off the 24 hour law and bring back the 15000 police they just made redundant to help cope with it.

I beleive in them both to a degree, but I do beleive if you get involved with any of the emergency services whilst drunk you should foot the bill.

But also supermarkets shouldn't run lost leaders on alchohol, You can't buy 3 for 2 on fags!!

YES , A DAME!!-(dad speak for a woman of questionable morals ) >>>shame and shame again that girl!!! oh, and the pub shut at 9pm .

  19. A home brew section on the forum would be a great idea
Especially as ive got a home brew pressure keg that i found in my dads wood to use

The problem im going to have in this house is keeping it a reasonable constant temperature
Does anyone have one of those electric heat mats going spare?

I miss the days when pubs had certain opening times and shops were shut on sundays
