This was precison engineering. I heard that when they set up a strip at Riccall, south of York, which I was also involved with, they forgot the tape measure. They did however have a long ladder which they were able to measure and then pace out the strip. It later tuned out to be wildly inaccurate, but nobody seemed to care.
