Adapter for US Spec Hook-Up?

Discussion in 'Camper Conversions' started by PHILIP, May 17, 2012.

  1. I have just bought a US spec LHD 1979 T2 Westfalia which has an original Berlin interior including US-spec hook up. It all looks to be in working order. So, rather than pay to have it ripped out and a UK-spec assembly fitted, I was wondering if there is an adapter on the market for the external side-mounted socket which would enable us to easily connect the van to the mains at a UK campsite? Inside the cab, presumably a "universal adapter" will then enable me to convert the US socket/fuse unit to take UK 3-pin plugs.

Sorry, you can probably guess I'm neither a mechanic nor an electrician! Hope someone can help. Cheers.

As Ricky but my reasons are different. I too have a Berlin styled USA Campmobile. Having taken mine out l noted it was old. The wiring was just awful. The board under the bed thing looked unsafe and not really suitable for UK plugs plus it just it just looked dodgy.

l did buy a plug adaptor from a member on TLB about 2 years ago for when l do fit UK hook up but to be honest l have not really had much desire for hook up at the moment. I was told though l haven't measured up, that the UK plug housing that fits into the side of the body is a different size to the one on Stateside buses hence why l bought this plug.

  4. Yah im with Ricky and Birdy on this one. Take it out and start again. Think they are around £80 for a UK spec one and they are pretty easy to fit.

  5. what they all said ^^

    dont take risks mate.

If you need mains hook up, then get it all put in properly and tested .....and keep the original for show

I saw Bumpnudgers at the weekend. He'd managed to keep the outer cover for the socket and build in a uk one under the flap. Looked great. I imagine he replaced the wiring as his van is very tidy indeed. Looked good.
