accelerator cable to carb

Just fitting my new/second hand carb.
For some reason the accelerator cable now seems about an inch too short. Only just enough to connect to carb, but then the throttle arm can't return to rest position.

The old and new carbs look the same (both 34 Pict 3). I've checked the cable linkage at front, it all looks OK, not caught on anything. Cable moves freely.

Am I missing something?

The cable was holding the chassis together, now it's out the whole vans stretched out , like a pussy cat in the sunshine
