Acceleration 3rd & 4th

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Mary, Oct 5, 2013.

  1. I noticed when i first drove the van, it was reluctant to pull in third and would not do anything in fourth, now, i know there was "chuffing" and "blowing" out from the heads 1 & 2" (these are the terms the mech used) so he told me he had to removed the engine, tighten the bolts on the head and did the tappets the same time, now the engine sounds excellent, proper vw sound, but.. when I drove it home (20 miles) third was sweet enough, but it is still a little shy to accelerate (or pull) in fourth it seems like the accelerator needs to "catch" before I can give it any revs to increase the speed, could the accel cable need some kind of adjustment or tweeking? but like I say first second, is normal, third, I have got to rev high before releasing the clutch, and fourth? well fourth seems a litle its to shy to come out and play bat and ball,
please don't reply with expert advise about stripping anything down and less its quite visible and ease of use, I would prefer a straight forward answer to the fault which I can relay to the mechanic.
    Thank you

It doesn't pull well from low revs in 3rd and 4th

There you go if not interested in what it is but you want something to tell the mechanic to sort

  3. Could be many, many things, which your mechanic needs to sort out, if he's up to the job.

I don't like the sound of "chuffing", which implies to me that the head(s) aren't bolted down properly. They're unlikely to come loose unless the engine's been overheated, in which case one or more head studs may have pulled from the case. If your mech doesn't know how to fault find and fix stuff like this, I'd find another one.

Can you drive it far, I think @Chrisradioman Is somewhere near you he knows how it should be, It is difficult to diagnose on a few descriptive words. could you video it running and pop it up on here - just running the engine and pan around a bit, get someone to rev it up a bit while you film too!

  5. I can drive it no probs, was doing 55 today when for a half hour run, @snotty the chuffing I described is what the mech said, he did take the engine out tightn the bolts and all this has stopped, the engine sounds fine, what i'm finding is this, the bus doesn't like 3rd and 4th with low revs, example, I will accel to 25-30 in 3rd, hardly a problem, change to 4th and then re accel put it seems like it wont, I push the pedal down but its not giving the revs instantly, it climbs to the revs and speed very very slowly, It will then run to 55-60 no probs, its like there is no revs when changing to fourth,

  6. @poptop2 it'll drive anywhere at the mo m8 :)

Could you take a picture of the carb linkages and breather pipe set up. the little ones at the top of the engine compartment and the ones connected to the air filter and pop them up.

  8. Try going a bit higher on the revs before changing up, changing/maintaining,increasing speed is a learned art ,also is there much play in your/the throttle system/linkage?is your change up style "tight"?

  9. I know for a fact theres no oil breather hose, and if I recall the AA guy (whom when arrived last week pointed out the battery wasn't connected because when removing the jump leads, my m8 accidently hit it off without noticing) blocked off a little outlet pipe half way down the carb

Fourth gear in 30 is pushing it a bit low. Might why it started chuffing in the first place.

I know it sounds worse but higher revs up to red line are better than too low.
    My acceleration goes

    First gear 15 change up
Second 25 to 30 change up
Third 45 to 50 change up

It will pull gradually from 30 in 4th on a flat road but to accelerate change down ..

  11. thought of the high revs but don't want to put to much pressure on the engine @ this point, as for changing up tight? not quite sure what you mean

These are the sort of things you need right on these vans mate- It really is important to get the van running properly that all these hoses pipes etc are in the right place.

Post a picture of how it is now and we will tell how it should be- you can sort it if you still have the bits - easy peasy lemon juice. - err squeezy.

  13. @mikedjames that's a really useful piece of info what I was going to ask at a later date
    thank you so much

  14. i'll repost the pic of the reposted pic you posted and describe the in/outlet on the carb, give me a min

have way down centre of carb the AA guy blocked that little hole in the centre, there is no oil breather hose, and the oil filler cap is now missing

Is that how it is now?

At the front of the carb there is a small breather pipe missing that should be connected to the small breather pipe system in the top of the engine bay, the air filter connection at the top of the carb looks loose? Can you clamp that on properly?

  20. before the welding on the left, this is basically now (before AA guy capped the carb) without oil cap and breather hose
