Aaaaaargh! Accelerator cable swap

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Andy_H_VW, May 22, 2012.

  1. Hello peeps

So tried to change the accelerator cable this evening as the old one was frayed and stretched... Wish hadn't bothered as can't get the new one in.

    HELP!

The issue is with the tube by the gearbox which presume should be attached to the tinware? Well that tube has come loose and I cannot feed the cable through.

I tried feeding cable from rear to allow me to bring some fishing line through so can pull the cable through... But keeps catching.

Any ideas before really lose my rag.

    Please help.

  2. Remove the air filter and reach round the back of the fan housing

You will feel the accelerator tube as it pokes out of the back

Fasten a strong cable tie round it for now and fit a jubilee clamp on it next time you drop the engine

  4. You need to get it through the flex conduit. This is prob where it's getting stuck. Might be able to fiddle it from under the van.

  5. As your looking at the engine from the engine bay door its the right hand side you want to be reaching round

  7. It took me ages to get mine in after takeing the engine out I just had to feed a welding rod down the tube and try and pull the cable back .
If you can get your hand in to feel round it you might get the right spot

  8. This is a real pain! You need good light on top of gear box, lie on your back feet out backnof van, and poke flex conduit through the hole in the crossmember and the rear engine tinwear panel, this is possible! You use your right hand up by the clutch cable and you can get your fingers on it to help it through, then you have to get the end to stick on the solid pipe through the fan housing (assuming a 1600!) by rwaching around the back in engine bay and the cable should then go through ok.

Took me about 30 mins last week as was poking through wrong hole!

  10. Thanks for all the help folks. So I need to poke the hole some more..... ::)

  11. Just make out your blind and about to make love to a beautiful woman!
Laying on your back with your right arm up and over the gearbox with your eyes shut, grab that flexible conduit and gently twist and push until it slots home through the gearbox mounts-you will know it's there when the conduit just pops in all tight and ridged, then just clasp your hand around the conduit from the gearbox side and slowly slide your clenched fist firmly but caressingly towards the front of the van to smooth out any bends in said conduit to make the the journey of your new cable less arduous. Then with your right arm from inside the engine bay reach behind the fan housing, you should after many attempts of pushing the cable up from the front feel the the long extruded but quite well formed pert nipple of the cable. With your free but shaking left hand slowly push and twist at the same time your accelerator cable tube through your fan housing from the front whilst firmly gripping that pert nipple, don't let go of that nipple as you may put a kink in the cable if you just shove that accelerator tube home, instead, using your first and index finger of your right hand of which you can not see as it's still behind the fan shroud, slowly pass the cable into the accelerator tube inch by inch until it appears out the front of your fan housing.
I managed to do this 2 weeks ago after countless attempts and a lot of swearing,so decided to take the methodical sensual way ;)

  13. Thanks to everyone who posted here and gave descriptions of how to fix it.

Took less than 10 minutes in the end.
I had some stiff garden wire which used to feed into the accelerator tube from the rear. Reaching round back of fan shroud I was able to feed it into the next part of its path. It made its way through cross member and then I pushed the flexible conduit thing up onto the wire. This way I was able to get it where it needed to be.
After that I was able to follow the advice given here.

    Karma to all.
    :D :D :D :D
