So we are seeing the last of the petrol cars.....the last Fiesta, the last Volvo estate have apparently been sold.... Ignoring super cars - I can't think of a single car with a petrol engine currently on sale that I'd want to keep*. I'm bemused by this - the last of the petrol engine cars are so utterly non special not one on sale right now jumps out at me. Are there any on sale you'd want to keep as the last of the breed? I'm not talking super cars remember. *actually - a current Defender seems nice.
Fair point - never thought I'd quite fancy owning an Austin 1100, a Maxi or an Allegro - but all quite appeal to me now. The end of Volvo estates though, that's shocking. They were what Volvo built their reputation on. And no more 'Fiesta'?? A solid little car since 1977. But @Moons is right - there's nothing setting my world on fire about modern cars in general, let alone one that I would want to keep. I'm really fond of my 'old style' Volvo V40 (2002), and when I thought it was going to die on me, I really struggled to think of a replacement that was younger that I actually wanted to drive. Thankfully it wasn't as terminal as I feared and it lives on, but the question will arise one day....
Agree….but this is the very zenith, the last of the line, the pinnacle of 100 years. and nothing jumps out at me. I find it very weird.
The pinnacle as far as looks go was decades ago. I don't think I'd want to be lumbered with a very modern car intending to keep it - they go wrong even now and aren't worth what it costs to fix them? I think we Bay owners got this one right, 50 years on they're still pretty useable and desirable and as importantly - fixable.
I think that anything built in the last 20 years has too much electrickery for me to want to keep it. I've got enough spares to keep the MG and Ford Pilot running for longer than I'll be able to drive; I just need to squirrel away a complete set of running gear for the VW and that's me sorted.
Because I’m so much younger than you lot I need a newer, reliable car for a bit longer. would love to just have the bus, the escort and a herald convertible as my fleet.
I don't think it is the end of petrol cars as the marketeers would have us all believe. The all electric push will soon fall on its arse and in 10 years time the new car market will be dominated by Fiesta-size, self-charging hybrids.
I'm thinking along the same lines although possibly with a hydrogen twist . Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
And a growing retention of small petrol engined cars from the mid 1990's, well built, comfortable but without the obsessive overloading of electronics. Who really needs rain sensing wiper function and mood setting interior lighting programmes?
Beetle? Built for the the people. It won't be long before you can buy a DIY kit that will clip together, much the same as the factories do now. Batteries optional extra of course.
Yes and you could also say the first Golfs but they've learned not to do that now. The world is turning too fast for this now - things must be over complex and break quickly.
