A nice surprise (for a change)

  1. Some of you will be aware that I bought an imported 1972 Kombi in August. Having been away for a couple of weeks in the sun I finally got started on overhauling the mechanicals today.....and for once I was pleasantly surprised just how good the underside is considering it's 40+ years old. Job done today were replacing wheels bearings, discs, calipers and brake lines. Whilst I was in the midst of all this, I did notice that the rubber boots on of the ball joints had perished.

The question is.....do I replace all of the ball joints? If so, how difficult is this? Can I just replace the rubber boot. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1411938778.822360.jpg ImageUploadedByTapatalk1411938794.348959.jpg

  2. test the joints if they are ok just replace the rubber boots...

  3. Thanks. Will I just need a ball joint spliter to gain access to the perished boot?

you do need a splitter although sometimes they come apart ok, you have to jack the other one up as the beam is twisting down all it's pressure on them, if you need to do both you can only do one of them with both off (not making much sense but i know what i mean) also the ball joint is egcentric to keep the camber straight so make sure you check the orientation and put it back the same - there should be a little dint in the edge of it
