A little City break.... Barcelona

  1. Me and the missus are planning on going off to Barcelona in a few weeks, just for 3 nights, for her 40th. Who has been before? Any little hidden away 'must see/do' places that the brochures dont tell you?

We've never been before, really looking forward to it.

Loads to see and do, we've done a few city breaks and Barcelona is right up there with the best.

    Have a fantastic time

  3. Went to a couple of week long conferences there - had a great time - it can get a bit dodgy if you wander off the beaten track but imbibe enough absinthe and it won't concern you.

Dopn't try to climb the steps up the towers of the Sagrada Familia - wait for the lift

  4. Cable car across the harbour , Sagrada familia ,Nou camp ,Ramblas a great city to visit

  5. Watch out for yourself over there.. My parents went a few months back, on their way back to the hotel one night a mugger tried to take Mums handbag !!

Took my Dad (72) two punches before the mugger fell to the floor...

Dad was upset with himself, he felt he should of done it with the first punch.

Nice place though, I've be a couple of times...

I'd do Park Guell too - love all the Gaudi trail bits. Agree with Paley about the lift ;)

  8. 3 days is about right for barca
I went on the tourist bus that you get off and on all day. Nou camp is worth a visit and the zoo was ok. Im not into churces so i skipped that bit and just saw the outside from the bus. there are loads of tapas bars and places to eat, the harbour was good too

  9. Haha, seriously! A whole thread on here, a campervan forum, about Barcelona and NONE of you have taken a, er, campervan! ;D

Sorry... I'm driving down there on Sunday for a few days and was hoping for tips on where to park up etc ;) If anyone knows please do shout!

  10. we went a few years back and got engaged there ... in the ZOO!

Make sure you check out La Rambla and the churches, bars etc off that.
The sea, the tourist bus is good, , Sagrada familia ...

As BagBoy says - be careful - there is a LOT of crime in Barca so keep stuff in safes and only take out what you can afford to lose.

I got mugged there in 2000 - long story - but a few days later we saw the mugger again and lets just say we mugged him back!

  11. Yes take care its a great city, pick pockets are rife on underground, driving bit like london ,take sat nav if you have one a must really ,that will give you car parks, sites etc. stick to outskirts and get metro in. Have fun ,they have antique and other markets down by harbour where the cruises come in. Lots to do and great food. We love it their, are you going to drive it in two days?? or steam it in one lol?? Tolls not cheap. But service stations good for stops.

  12. Oh yes ... driving .... that was scary .... !

  13. love Barcelona, next time want to do this

a walk around sites from the beautiful book 'The Shadow of the Wind' by Carlos Ruiz Zafon

the Boqueria market off the Ramblas is fantastic, but don't bother with Mercat dels Encants, they don't call it a flea market for nothing :-

If it's really hot head for the Gotic area, be careful it can be a bit dodgy but the narrow streets make it cool and there are some lovely little squares where you can have a few drinks and people watch and the old cathedral has a cooling inner courtyard and rippling water.

  14. The people can dress a tad on the strange side though ;)

  15. there is also some great strip clubs there

  16.
  17. The zoo is excellent....shame snowflake the albino gorilla they there has died though.....

    Mark :)

  18. Love Barcelona !
thieves tried to snatch my girlfriends bag. Big mistake, (she's from Detroit). She was wearing a white linen two piece and the team spilt chocolate ver her as a diversion. No. 2 guy snatched her bag. She chased him down across the traffic swing her heavy old SLR round her head. The guy freaked and dropped her bag. I followed up behind as protection (for them, she would kill em!)

You have to have hot chocolate and churros at the opera cafe on the ramblas. Waiters are fun. They just walk across the roads from the cafe to the seating. They own the place and the car drivers know it. They'll take 10 orders at a time. No note book.

I love a city that has an underground that takes you to the beach!

have fun, I'm really jealous (in a good way :D )

  19. If you do nothing else - make sure you do the Sagrada Familia, it is pretty impressive from the outside..........but inside, you get up close and personal with some of the detail - I'll tell you no more - go see for yourself!!! 8)

  20. Great city to just explore on foot. Gaudi trail is pukka and segura do is something else.

We just took a walk in a different direction each day.

    Great city... Enjoy
