72 year indicator switch operation and repair

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Diddymen, Feb 8, 2013.

  1. evenin all,

couple of questions - first on the operation. for high beam, there seems to only be one setting ie pull for on (flash?) there doesnt appear to be a way of latching it on, or is this done through the relay?

so can you only flash main beam on a 72? or only have it on? (and pull again to turn off?)

    ...hope that made sense

2nd question .......its broken :( ....I know these are hard to get now and quite expensive so I'm thinking of trying to fix mine and I've got a few ideas. But before I go ahead with my hair brained over engineered attempt I thought I'd see if any one else has managed to make a good long term fix of theirs.

the bit that is broken is the main bracket for the cancellation switch of the indicators at the steering column side of the switch. It is a bit of plastic that has snapped, and I'm unlikely to be able to buy the part!!

I have stripped the whole thing apart now so I know how it all works - just wondered what the best fix would be as I doubt glue would hold it. I'm thinking of either making something out of metal or bonding a metla strip to the 2 halves of plastic using epoxy resin and then either bolt or screw through the metal strip and plastic

    any ideas appreciate

pics are just uploading to photo bucket so should follow soon!!!!!

  2. Pull to flash when headlights off, pull to switch on main beam when the headlights on. Same thing- -pretty sure it's done through the relay.

Relay indeed. When lights are off, pulling the stalk (ooer missus) flashes them, when they're on it switches from dip to high and back.
It's a fiddly bit to repair. I'm sure a man of your patience and determination would be able to carve a new one from a piece of nylon. :D

  4. thanks for the operation description mate :)

you may jest old chap, but the thought had crossed my mind :D

  5. ok some pics of the bits for any one else who may already have done a similar repair

and with the switch dismantled you can see that the plastic bit is split in half

if I can get it fixed I'll make this into a how too ....I have already taken loads of pics :D

so any tips greatly appreciated :)

Glue the plastic bit together and visit a 3D printer.
