It’s very moving to visit the Normandy beaches if you ever get a chance. As you say, such brave souls.
yes i visited a few years ago also theres a massive complex at Oostende in Belgium thats well worth a visit https://www.raversyde.be/en/atlantikwall-raversyde
Quite appropriate that I’ll be crossing the channel later today (Just realised in a German vehicle so maybe not)
We have just come back from France and visited this place Glade of the Armistice +33 3 44 85 14 18 https://maps.app.goo.gl/YPVHN37nmA7yW7Ax6?g_st=ic https://armistice-museum.com
Everyone tends to associate 6th June with the D-Day Landings on the beaches of Normandy (quite rightly too), but don't forget the other operation that took place that day... https://www.dday-overlord.com/en/d-day/air-operations/commonwealth/pegasus-bridge My Grandad was in one of the gliders, and although he survived the landing (injured the following day and sent home to recover, before going back out) he sadly lost his life 10 months later in Germany, less than a month before VE Day.
Sorry about your grandad . I will read the list no when I have better reception. Very very brave men.
That’s a fascinating read Sarah. Thank you. Don’t think I ever realised gliders were used. You can imagine the chaos of the firefight that follows. Brave brave people involved. Sad that your grandad lost his life before VE
A brilliant read @scrooge95 . My oldest customer, Mr Webber, is nearly 96 and was in the cadets and remembers being taken up in one of the gliders when they were training
I'll just drop this thread hijack in here quietly ... Don't want to make a full blown thread of it: They dropped the bomb on Hiroshima on my Dad's 17th birthday... and gave Nagasaki the same treatment 15 years before I was born ... and Dad died yesterday on this key anniversary :-/ So, two months exactly short of his 95th, having stopped working Autumn 2022 ... Attached is a photo from his role as a scary answering machine in a Giffgaff Halloween advert. Just a taster. Enjoy!
Sorry to hear that Mike, he was obviously a huge character and great influence on your life. RIP Mr Dub and Dubber Snr.
