40 Dell DLRA's and Zorst?

  1. Would this be enough to give a bog standard 1600TP a bit more oomph for hills? Also which exhaust would people recommend? I want to keep my exchangers and I dont want a loud pipe. In fact I like the sound of the standard putt putt.

You see I live halfway up a very steep hill. I dont want a really fast bus. And I dont want to shatter the relatively modest fuel economy too much. I get 20-22mpg (ish). But I would like to get up hills more easily than I do if my momentum is lost.

Plus at 30mph theres not quite enough meat to pull 4th gear.

  2. I would say 36 dells are more suited for a 1600 .

  4. Dell 40s'll be fine. 36/40 just relates to the physical size of the carb - just a bit of aluminium that holds all the bits together. The important thing is the venturi size, which you can change. 28mm is a nice size for a stock bus. You'll have to get the jetting right as well. All the bits are available.

A 4 into 1 is worth fitting with twin carbs. Any 4 into 1 will lose the "blatt blatt" VW engine noise, unfortunately, as the "blatt" is caused by the unequal pipe lengths on the stock exhaust.

  5. Well theres no difference in price on Eurocarb but I want to future proof the carbs in case i slip on some bigger barrels and pistons and/or heads at some point in the future. Hence the 40mm.

Shame about the putt putt. I like that. Is there no 4 into 2?

I've got ICT 34's on my 1955. You don't need big carbs unless you plan to rev the tits of it on the strip.
4:1 exhausts are ok if you buy a large flange one. The small flange ones are just about ok for a 1600.

  8. Is fitting twin carbs with a stock exhaust a pointless excercise then?

Just Kampers do an excellent stainless exhaust for ~ £330 all in & it fits the heat exchangers well. We have one on Gusbus, the fit is spot on & the sound is great!
