Just taken the carb off for strip/ rebuild , butterfly etc at top is all blackish. This was all cleaned by me last time I had it off because of probs. So is it normal for it to go like that or does it mean running rich? Only couple hundred miles done since it was cleaned last
I dont know you that well? Is that what people do these days? What did the RAC person do ? Do you know? How could he fix it anyway there is nowhere to plug a laptop in?
RAC was young numpty, all gelled spikey hair and ecigarette. I'm don't know everything he did as he was very late arriving so I had to go and get my boy from school while he "fixed" it. I have found that he adjusted the acc cable on carb right to the end ffs( I know it wasn't like that before) and also was fiddling with adjustment screws claiming they were bust
if it's sooty in appearance, it's most likely to be blow-by entering through the air filter, unless the engine has been backfiring recently
if he was unfamiliar with this carb he may well presume that the adjustment screws are 'bust'....unless the choke and fast idle screw have been set first, the bypass screw and volume control screw don't behave as you would expect....it's easy to set both so that the motor 'seems' to be running right, but the idle circuit on these carbs is really finnicky...this is why most people end up running over rich.... if the engine idles better with more fuel to air than recommended, then it suggests there's an air leak....throttle spindles/carb base gasket/inlet manifold rubbers or inlet to cylinder head gaskets
He probably did enough just to get you home, so hopefully it will be adjuster properly for you. Funny about spikey haired muppets- gelled spikey hair and fat ties used to be people who worked in HR or recruitment!! It was like an unofficial uniform! Now its fekin beards!!
