34 PDSIT Accelerator Pump volume

    [ This is a repost from Howto as advised by paradox. New info. in [brackets] ]

    I have a 1974 dual solex PDSIT 2/3 carb, 1800cc, from USA and I'm currently trying to set the accelerator pump volume.

    Haynes says:

    1974 (valve open) 0.55 - 0.85 cc
    1974 (valve closed) 1.3 - 1.7 cc

    per pump stroke.

    What valve is Haynes talking about?

    I see section 14.9 says:

    In late 73, on the 1.8 litre engine a valve has been fitted ... (paraphrasing...) ... below 21C it's closed and pump delivers 1.5cc, then above 21C the valve opens and allows some of fuel to go back to float chamber roughly having the delivery volume 0.7cc.

    [ I think this valve is fitted to automatics only ]

    Anyone know where this valve is? [ on side of float bowl ]
    If I don't have it, do I just set to 1.5cc ? [ pretty sure I don't, just a big blanking plug ]
    Finally, is 21C the air temp? [ most likely the temp. around the carb. ]

    So, what volume ? ratwell.com says 0.5 - 0.9 cc per stroke, so maybe this is definitive enough..

    Buy a Bentley manual, keep the Haynes as a quick reference. 20240202_180301.jpg

    Bentley does have a few pages on adjusting these carburettors.

  3. As shown here, the thermostatic valve is in fig 5-23. What's supposed to happen is that you set up the volume of squirt at around 1.5 ml when cold and as the temperature warms up it gets throttled back to half of this by the thermostat. If like on mine, neither of the thermostats work, set the volume to about 0.6 ml. Mine seems to cope with this when cold but most importantly doesn't waste fuel when warmed up.

    Sarran1955 shows how to adjust the volume. though he doesn't have thermostat bulbs.

    I'm keen to get some working thermostat bulbs if anybody knows where.
