3 way fridge question

Discussion in 'Camper Conversions' started by Luis Navarro, Sep 17, 2013.

  1. Hi all,

So i finally picked up an Electrolux 3 way fridge at a bargain price (£40) and i have a couple of questions on fitting it.....

If i'm not planning to run it on LPG (I'm not) will i still need to cut in a vent in the side panel? I would prefer not to as i think the new camper vents look shocking and the old style metal Electrolux covers are hard to come by.
Also, for mounting it, are they flush fitting? As it'll mean cutting my freshly made units and i don't want it to look gash.
Think i understand about allowing for voltage drop on the 12v accross the supply wiring so i'm all good there....just the above i could use some pointers on really :)

    Thanks in advance,

  2. If you run it on gas then it will require venting.
A 24v compressor fridge would be better if you don't want to cut holes in the van.

  3. mine is vented to outside thru vent ,yes you will need to unless someone knows different and you need vent top and below for burner.

  4. If your not running it on gas you wont need the flu
I use mine for 12v and 240 ,never had any problems.

This. I have no flu so I dont use it on gas. Works fine on 12 and 240volt.

  6. I looked at these but the cost of the power inverter made it prohibitive. Not worried about gas tbh as i'll only be carrying a small bottle for the stove burners :)

  7. Yeah there a total waste of money on gas for what you can keep cool due the size and the amount of gas they use.
£40's a bargain as well

  8. On the last one i did, i drilled through the side for the flue but the cooling vents were drilled through the floor under the rear of the fridge and in the worktop over fridge at the back, and i used a UPVC window strip vent cover to cover the hole in the worktop.

  9. Ideal, so as long as its adequately spaced from the side panel to allow airflow, i shouldn't need to cut any additional holes in my bus?
Already had the core cutter out to do the island table, and i've got to chop the intake/exhaust holes for the eberspacher so i dont want to make any more really lol

  10. 24v? I don't know what I was thinking of! I mean 12v.
A compressor fridge can be run from the leisure battery while parked up because of their relatively low power consumption. The fridge you have will need 230v hook-up if not connected to gas.

  11. Been looking for weeks but they all seem to make over £100 used on ebay. I thought £40 seemed pretty reasonable lol

  12. yeh get a big throw out one for summer , ive been converted , ice cold beer and meat etc says fresh:) moosive 30 cans plus food .

  13. That should be ok....i've got a 240 hookup and RCD courtesy of the previous owner. Untested but should work ok. Just need to get it all mounted up and make some sort of power management panel so it looks tidy :)

  14. Yeah I payed £100 for mine to upgrade to a 3 way ,best thing I've done though as I do go away alot ,the problem was although the same make the flu pipe is on the other side for some reason and wont match up to the flu that was installed when devon converted it :(

No, you wont need to cut any holes to run it on electric.
I find that 12volt cools it down really quickly whilst driving, then just bung it on 240volt when you arrive.
    Happy days

  16. I replaced the Electrolux with a dometic and had the same problem with the flue. I had to use a flexible adaptor pipe.
For peace of mind, I placed a co2 detector in the space between the fridge and sink just in case.

  17. Excellent! Cheers guys :)

Now i've just got to bite the bullet and chop the front of my £1200 brand spanky new units to fit it.....:confused:

    Mental note:
    Plan interior
    Buy extras
    Order interior

  19. Lololol well i know this NOW!
Wasn't initially going to have a fridge but my other half decided it would be a nice option to have and then i won this one for cheaps so......

  20. just to throw a spanner in the works....the flue is obviously for fumes....no gas-no flue outlet BUT...the absorbtion unit will get hot if you run it for a reasonable length of time....while it won't be hot enough to set your bus alight (assuming there's nothing inflammable close by) the fridge will run badly ie not cool efficiently. Everyone I know who has a fridge fitted without a proper cowling/shroud to channel cold air from the bottom vent through the cooling fins and out the top vent complain about how crap their fridge is....this is the reason why
