    type 4 1800 engine - here's the code, not one i reconise - the guy said it was from a 24v system, had 24v solenoids on the twin carbs and a 24v dizzy.

    is it of any real use and is it worth much?

    i presume you could change the bits to a 12V system

  2. type 127 is the industrial engine, used for moving guns around the battlefield, used as water pumps, generators etc. You'll need to swap out all of the 24v systems for 12v, including dizzy, leads etc. Here is some info I found when I was going to buy one then change my plans;

    "They are plated as type 127 engines, 49.3kw (67bhp), 1800cc, so are almost identical in rating to the 1800 AP engine fitted to bays from 73-75. They have 24V electrical systems, so that all needs replacing (e.g. alternator, ignition, chokes). They come with larger carbs than the normal type 4 (they are stamped 40 PDSIT). The crankcases are aluminium, not magnesium. The oil coolers do indeed have take-offs for an additional external oil cooler. Looking at the engine numbers these would appear to be made in the early '80s (VW system is unclear on their exact production date) and so should have 41 x 34 valves, though we have not taken any appart to confirm. ETKA indicates that these engines may well have the internal sump baffle usually only fitted to the Porsche 914 version, though again we have not taken any apart to confirm. They have 215mm flywheels and clutches. They have Manual tappets and the early "open" breather box."

    From memory I don't believe the carbs are suitable for vehicle application so they will need to go too. Good core engine though just needs a few minor modifications.

  3. as for what its worth, depends on if its new or how many miles its done, what condition its in etc etc. Personally I don't pay more than £150 for a used complete type 4 unless i can verify its heritage. If its a genuine "just off the shelf unused or as new" type 127 look at up to £700. Beware though, I don't know of anywhere who still has these new and unused. One just went on ebay recently for £750.

  4. The carbs are fine to run. They were stock on 412ls'.
    They have stubby manifolds but do work best with the og airbox.
    I just sold 3 counties 2 sets.

    Thanks guys, it's a second hand no idea on mileage but is complete.

    Probably not ideal to put in a prototype bay then.

    I also noticed heat exchangers where much smaller/thinner than normal type 4's but these were in great condition.
