2 way fridge question

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Lord Congi, Sep 21, 2012.

  1. just put hook up into the van and I have a cool box that has a 12v step down convertor from 240 v,could I use this to wire the 2 way fridge so it runs off 12v whilst on hook up?

Cheers for any help or advice

  2. Depends if the transformer is capable of providing the current required by the 12v element in the fridge

  3. Do you not have a charger that charges the battery when your on hookup? (thus replenishing what the fridge takes out of the battery)

  6. Thanks for all the advice ,got it running at the moment.
Should I turn it off then?

  7. Depends on the current rating of the coolbox. Thermoelectric type coolboxes draw about 4 amps. My Westy 3 way is rated at 65 watts which is around 5 1/2 amps.

You need a transformer which can deliver on a constant basis without tripping out. Do-able though.

One thought though. Units designed for campers often don't have thermostats on the 12V section as they're only intended for travelling. A thermoelectric type would be OK though.

  8. Ok so it could get too cold then?
Suppose I could just turn it off for a while if that happened?

  9. Having said that mines been on for 3 hours and it dosent seem to be getting much colder :(
