1800 injection stalling/ wont idle

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Bigdavemill, Aug 14, 2012.

  1. We have trouble with idle/ stalling and wont tick over when warm, the idle screw makes no difference :(
1 garage had a look over it whilst we were in cornwall and says we either have an air leak or valves not opening up correctly, they wanted it for a couple of days to take a good look over it, obviously we couldn't leave it with them as would have nowhere to sleep!
they said it seams to be running lean?!
other than the tick over it seem to run OK.
I have visually checked the pipes and they seem OK.
Can anyone advise me where i should look or do?

  2. Not an expert by any means, but if it's when it gets warm that it starts thowing a hissy fit, maybe the cylinder head temperature sensor is not working correctly? (Pretty sure VW Heritage do these now) I think the stock position for this is by #3 cylinder (mine's not in the stock position so only guessing here!) Follow a thin wire that should disappear down there and you should find it. Another possibility is that the Air Flow Meter (next on from the air flter) could be faulty. Difficult to get hold of these and they ain't cheap, but you may get lucky as a lot of people give up on FI when it starts playing up and fit carbs instead!

More adept officionados may wish to correct me or add some other possibilities but that's where I'd start

    Good luck.

  4. Right, unfortunately, could be a number of things, that's why we all love FI...

Have a look here for help, I've put all the FI literature together in one place for some bed time reading. The first link to the VW troubleshooting guide is invaluable

It could be air leak somewhere as the mechanics say but I'd suggest you look at the Aux Air Regulator and check that's working. If that's ok it could be the Air Sensor or Double Relay.

Print out the troubleshooting guide and put it together in the right order, (the actual guide is double sided but it had to be scanned in single sided), and just follow the guide. It makes you do things in the right order and cancel out parts at each step.

FI is nasty to diagnose as if you don't troubleshoot in order it can and often does mask proplems and make them look like something else.
