WANTED 1700 type 4 engine

Discussion in 'Late Bay Parts Classifieds' started by grub, Jul 4, 2022.

  1. Hi all
You may have seen my thread(s) re my 1700 type 4 engine that has seized.
Talking to a couple of people it sounds like a valve seat may have dropped out, or similar.
    Just weighing up my options.
I haven't got the knowledge to strip & rebuild the engine myself.
Recon engines cost a fortune & not really sure about the quality.
So, just wondered if anyone has a good 1700 type 4 that I could just swap over?
I've obviously got all the ancillaries including new carbs.
    Thx. 20220528_184615.jpg

    Thanks @Mark Darby.

@grub, I've got most of the FI parts but if you don't get a bite for the whole engine, I'd be happy to look at the FI bits if you are happy to split and live down south?

Edit: just realised the eBay add is not your engine, so ignore message above unless you end up buying it and want rid off FI.

The W code 1700 like the above EBay link, had, I think, a different cam to the bus 1700, and high compression domed pistons, so might not be ideal in a heavy bus. @77 Westy might be able to confirm?

It’s pointless looking at options before you know what is wrong. Whip off the heads and have a look. If it’s only dropped a valve seat a couple of new heads would be an easy fix but if you need a replacement engine look for an 1800 or 2.0l.

If it's got a loose valve seat, you need a new head, not a new engine. It's really not a big technical job to bolt a head on.
If you replace the whole engine you'll have to move over everything that's bolted to it which is a far bigger job. ;)

A 1700 Porsche 914 engine would fit in a bus but the torque characteristics are not ideal.

50 years on, just because the case has a W on it means nothing, it's just a number on a case. Even 25 years ago my W numbered engine had no go faster bits in it.

That’s why I only said a 1700 Porsche 914 engine would fit. That eBay engine may or may not be Porsche spec.

@grub ... don't know where you've got to with this but since I do like a long shot, @Camperboy40 mentioned having two engines with his project listed for sale ......
I'll just leave this here. You never know!
