Ive finally started to try and get my old crap box running and decided to start at the beginning with valve gaps. When adjusting them, feelers in the gap, there is freeplay in the rocker (?think thats what its called) even when the nut is tightened up, so i mean the rocker can move to or away from the feeler, which obviously alters the gap slightly. should the gap be measured with the rocker pushed towards or pulled away from feeler? im certain i read about this a long time ago but cant find any reference to it now. hope you can follow what i mean!
Push on the other end of the rocker before measuring the gap. There's like a dished gnurled bit to press on.
excellent thanks mate. so basically its "opening" the gap up to its max for the purpose of the measuring then?
And make sure you've not got 2 or more feeler gauges stuck together.... I did, and had to do the whole lot again. Happy days
It's not normally necessary to wait a month before setting the tappets . If you can hold them without shrieking, you can set them...
It's easy peasy like truck driving and making fences, get the mrs to shout instructions at you and it will go swimmingly
The bit that always frustrates me is you get the gap right then tighten the lock nut and it nearly always closes the gap a tiny bit, even though I hold it with a screwdriver. Three hands would help.
It's funny, if you look through divorce court proceedings, "shouting at spouse while adjusting tappets" is surprisingly common.
