1600 TP coming out - what other jobs to do?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by orangefeeling, Mar 14, 2016.

  1. Right, the engines coming out to examine the breathers and fuel filler as they appear to be held together mostly with electrical tape, and I'm allergic to giant fireballs in my engine bay.

Whilst its out, any other tasks worth doing? On the T25 it was always replace spigot bearing and starter motor bush - is there any similar tasks on the 1600 its worth doing whilst I'm in there?

    Cheers,

    Alex

  2. Check all your fuel lines and breather lines (you can only get in to the tank area to check the breather lines and main fuel inlet pipe when the engine is out).

Check for and address any oil leaks,

Check the clutch release bearing in the gearbox bell housing,

Check the condition of your clutch,

That's a little list for starters.

  3. Cavity wax the inside arch tub and fuel tank areas

Look around for rusty bits and treat them.

Other gearbox leaks... Check the gearbox nose cone for oil leaks and consider pulling it back and down to change the lip seal and bushing on the gearchange shaft if it leaks there (fairly easy DIY).
Similarly for oil leaks from the gearbox output driveshaft seals if there is gearbox oil sprayed everywhere from the side of the gearbox (harder DIY but possible), easier to remove the gearbox but can remove the bearing and seal carrier with the gearbox in. Do not forget to make a mark so you do it up exactly the same.

If you have lowered the gearbox down a bit, check the gear change shaft from front to rear while you can pull it out.
Especially (and worth it even if you do not pull the gearbox) Check the shift coupler on the gearbox nosecone.
For worn plastic bits - if your shift coupler is original VW just take the urethane bits out of an EMPI kit and leave the rest somewhere well away from your bus.
Otherwise you need to weld up the collar with the grubscrew to the cage bit so it does not go wobbly and end up worse than before.

  5. Manifold boots?

  6. Cheers all for your suggestions, gives me a nice list of bits to get on with.

For the most part I find this approach applies to most EMPI products!
