WANTED 1600 engine

  1. I don'y understand why the 1600 is being so elusive?

Any 1600 or 1641 aircooled will do - ideally with a 'van' crank case, but a beetle one would do and getteh concertor plate (like this https://www.justkampers.com/00-9148...MIyISQs7yY2QIVT7nACh1o6QjNEAYYASABEgIOjvD_BwE)

There are at least 10 complete turnkey engines in eBay, and even more refurbed long blocks. Prices vary wildly.

Elite (mixed reviews, read up first) do a 'refurb' engine for £750 https://elite-engines.com/engines_prices/ and carry stock.

VW Heritage do brand new non exchange long block units for £2.5k https://www.vwheritage.com/vw-bay-bus-1968-79/vw-bay-bus-engine-1600cc/complete-engines and are ins stock. You could have this tomorrow if you order in the next 4 hours.

For £2.7k you could get a complete refurbed turn key from the engine shop - http://www.theengineshop.info/acatalog/air.html

Cool Air have stock at £1.5k for a long block

On facebook there are at least 5 in the Type 2 detectives swapmeet selling page - I got bored of counting.

Some on ebay are bonkers money

  3. Yep - over a grand for an unproven long block with no warranty. Might get lucky, might get stiffed.

At least the Elite one comes with some sort of warranty, even if build quality can be suspect.

  4. Thanks for the replies.

I guess I am being too picky - ebay and facebook worry me as most people don't seem to know anything about the history of the engine but still want close to rebuild price.

I'll hold out and save for a rebuild from the VW engine company - I've heard very good reviews from them. They also gave me a tour of their workshop when I was last there to pick up a gasket kit.

  5. No disrespect to the vast majority of sound forum members, but buying off a forum really doesn't give you any more warranty/peace of mind/security than just buying off eBay.

I bought an engine for a T25 off a T25 forum, was probably the worst thing I had ever bought (the post-mortem a few miles down the road showed the bearing had been installed back to front), but no real possibility of comeback.

If you are not the take a punt sort of a chap, then I'd save up for an engine with warranty.
