123 Ignition

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by T2-Phil, Nov 9, 2016.

  1. Hi All

I believe there are several people on this forum who have fitted a 123 Ignition system.

I am just about to fit one to my van which has a 1600cc single port engine and would be grateful for any advice regarding the best curve setting.

    Thanks.

    Phil

  2. Curve 0 (the default) or curve 2(? the curve 0 with double-sparking). Works fine.

  3. Thanks, I will ty curve 0.

    What is 'double-sparking'?

  4. The unit will generate two sparks one after the other at low revs, mainly for emissions. I'm not convinced it has much effect, but you might as well use it. Doesn't seem to have any effect on your rev counter, if you've got one.

Have been looking at these as my powerspark one has exploded and a old bosch one i have has loads of play.

I see the older type has pre programmed selectable programs but i can only find this direct from Holland, it appears the newer ones are fully programmable so that you have to do yourself.

Is the newer one worth it? is it easy to do and understand and set up?

Engine is a bog standard 1600 tp

  6. I've never really seen the point of programmable ones on a stock-ish engine. Unless you've got a dyno or rolling road, how are you going to tell if you've got it right? You can't measure the effect. I'd bet most folk with the new ones just end up using the stock curves.

  8. I'd personally go for the pre-programmed one.

Thanks for that i had only seen vintage speed selling them in the uk, I did notice that they are selling the tune cheaper than southen carbs are selling the basic by the time you add vat.

If you intend to get one buy it soon because the price of new ones from 123 will go up due to Brexit.

  11. If you are getting a 123, go for the one with the vacuum transducer. If for some bizarre reason you don't use it, you can just leave it disconnected.

  12. Even on a dyno, tuners seem reluctant to experiment much with timing as they are nervous about detonation. If you are willing to put a lot of time in to street tuning and have a CHT to keep an eye on things, you can make some meaningful changes.

  13. Hi all
I am vintagespeeduk and the dealer for the vw 123 here in the uk, I stock all the versions, have a look on the web shop, I also have special billet clamps made here in the uk for them and fit them to practically all my engine builds
I also do an ignition kit consisting of leads coil and a 123, they are a great bit of kit and much nicer than the u.s - Chinese tut available elsewhere.
    Thanks
    Dan.

  14. Out of interest Dan, how many failures of these units do you get?

  15. I personally have had no failures in 10 years plus, but had a customer with a problem, I sent it back and they fixed it no charge just cost the posting, some people may wire them up wrongly also whitch doesn't help , what I like is the build quality .

  16. Hi Dan

Shame I did not post a couple of days earlier, I have just purchased a Bosch Blue coil and a set of leads otherwise I would have contacted you.

I like to support suppliers who take time to reply to forum posts.

  17. Hi Dan

can't see the kit on your website, can yku send a link please and one to the clamp?

are these easy to fit and set up - would i need to set timing or just bolt it on?

    any tlb discount?

    many thanks

You'll need to do the timing as you're replacing the dizzy.

  19. Hi
The clamps are not on there, drop me an email and I can send the details.
