009 Distributor (Fake)

Today (after the van started to misfire at the MOT) I thought I would try and sort it.

I did a compression check and my results were:
    1 - 132 PSI
    2 - 126 PSI
    3 - 146 PSI
    4 - 138 PSI

I feel these are acceptable so moved onto my distributor which is a 009 style/fake. I say this as there is no stamp/embossing of “Bosch” anywhere on it but there is a sticker peeling off.

I decided to buy new condenser, points, rotor arm, distributor cap, plugs and HT leads. I tried GSF and Euro Car Parts whom now don’t stock much of anything for the aircooled vehicles. I looked at VW Heritage and Just Kampers only to see that some of the parts I need are on back order.

I ended up going to a local car spares and they have tried to order the bits I want but asked I take my distributor along so they can look at the components.

With having my distributor out I have decided I’m going to give it a thorough going over and it felt/sounded strange as I turned it. It is now virtually fully disassembled and I found that there was only 1 spring on the advance weights when it looks like there should be 2.

Can anyone advise if I am missing a spring or not?

I bought rotor arm, condenser, points and O ring from A H Schofields for the Bosch distributor I've just refurbished, usual excellent service.

It looks like the Accuspark I hacksawed in half the other day ...
A generic Chinese body, the parts are pretty similar to the Bosch parts, and made about as well.

It will work with one spring, it will be designed advance OK with one spring pushing against both weights - it will not have the stepped timing advance curve of the dual spring type, that is all.
Its an 009 so its a misfit in a Bus engine anyway.

These days, the sudden onset of misfiring on a points + condenser setup is usually the condenser, if you are sure the points are still opening properly, as I am sure the factories build in moisture as they make the capacitors inside the metal cans.

What is really annoying is that there are millions of X class capacitors that are made for mains power supplies that will do a better job, just they are in the wrong package for the distributor.

Why I ended up on the journey to a crank fire ignition system.

  4. Yes , missing a spring so pointless rebuilding it ...

Any reason you`re sticking with the 009 ??

Even a cheapo Accuspark would put you well along the road to satisfaction at around what you probably paid for the 009 service parts ?
Ok , so they`re not 100% reliable and there`s been more than a few failures but just because you only hear bad things doesn`t mean they`re not worth trying , if only to realise how crap 009`s really are . I ran a genuine Bosch 009 for years and was happy enough living with the flat spot but saw the light with a cheapo SVDA ..

    Just saying ....

    :hattip:

EDIT - just seen Mikes reply but surely they`d build it with only one spring if they thought one spring was enough ??
Maybe one really is enough but why chance it ...

  5. @Jules65 you are welcome to this if it helps.

I have spare points and condensor etc if you need some urgently [IMG]

We went through this on another thread fairly recently and the upshot was one spring is correct for that distributor.

As I have Dual Kadrons on the camper I don't believe I have anywhere for the vacuum advance pipe to attach for a Bosch 034 SDA. Hence I stick with the 009.

I don't believe my distributor is a Bosch 009 and is most probably an Accuspark or similar. I have looked in the garage but I only have an old 013 which has no internal components I can use.......I did however find a new distributor cap, points, condensor and rotor arm.

@mikedjames, don't suppose you have the springs out of the distributor you cut up?

Thank you for the offer Paul. Had you been quicker I wouldn't have just bought a second hand 009 :D. Hold onto it fella either of us may need it in the future.

So today I took delivery of a 2nd hand Bosch 009 distributor. This one I can say is definitely a Bosch and I set about taking it apart to give it an overhaul.

Imagine my surprise when on removing the points baseplate I was met with the advance mechanism and only the 1 spring.

So it would appear that @Zed is correct regarding the one spring issue.

Something I found out quite recently - to my surprise also! Personally I haven't had much to do with them, they're for stationary engines that only need a distributer to get up to the constant speed they run at. Thusly the advance curve is nonsense for a vehicle that runs at a variety of speeds. OK for the drag strip and wild cams that only get driven at full advance revs.

Arnt the beetle dizzys and the bus dizzys different curves?

I am… by asking…you remember that way of doing things, before google…you know… go on a designated site with people that know about these sort of things?
