I am setting up the endplay on my Type 4 2l build and the bolts that hold the flexplate to the crankshaft too stripped to torque.

It’s a 73 bus with the early 003 automatic transmission.

Awhile back I bought a bolt kit from GoWesty because I knew the originals were getting rough. This is what I bought:

I think the same thing is available at Heritage:

The info about whether they will fit is a bit vague. The new bolts are about 1 mm longer than the originals. The bolt heads are taller and are slightly proud of the flexplate but should give ample clearance with the torque converter.

Just wondering if anyone has used these bolts with an early autobox and cam comment on fit. Also, the instructions say to torque to 81 ft/lbs. I think the 65 ft/lbs listed in the Bentley is sufficient. It’s a flexplate, not a flywheel...unless there is something I’m missing.

    Many thanks for the help,

    James

  2. I refitted the originals or what came out should i say. Go by what Bentley says 65ft/lbs & some blue loctite.
Not sure on clearance but mine were the shallow head type.

  3. Thank you.
I would use the originals but the head of one is definitely too stripped. I haven’t been able to find the original style anywhere.

I guess my best bet is to measure the depth of the crank threads and how much the bolts threads protrude from the flexplate just to make sure the bolts are not bottoming out in the crank.
