Yes they are a mess and one by will most likely be removed and replaced. Fig went in on Monday, I'm on look out for a golden cherry as the old one here is in s bad way but still giving.
Do you get palm weevils in the US? They appeared when we were living in Spain and killed lots of palm trees. The beetles looked quite sweet but were decimaters. Also as their grubs were inside the trees it made them rot from inside

Go to florida , cheap quality boats . Especialy the auctions.. Buy a bus cheap ,too.! Some nice ones .. Send it all back . Has to be loads cheaper then the u.k. . Even just to be idle for a few months. If you find the right bus you can make a profit to ofset your travel. Heres a good one or two. A two minute quick search came up with . nope ,but they are filling in today ,I asked the supervisor when they will be finished ,he just said the equivalent of "who knows?"

On a tree like that I'd leave a good foot or so. Too late to do now as a "best practice". You'll get a load of new growth, just choose the one you want and trim off the rest.
