Just thought I'd let you all know about my conversation with Bears today. Spoke with Paul about my gearbox dilemma and they've stated that with pre '76 1600 boxes they can change the ring and pinion setup and apparently this converts the box to run with 2 ltr engines. They've quoted to overhaul the box, check all in order ad change the parts £900 plus vat. Obviously this is around similar prices for five, six or freeway boxes so difficult to now what to do really.
Lost me on the last sentence there S1mon?? He reckons it'll be the same ratios as a standard box. My box is a three rib, 1600 earlier box.
I'm thinking of swapping out the 4th and final drive on my 5 rib over winter. Gives a longer 4th than the standard 2.0 6 rib 091.
Going rate for a rebuild is around £700 now (I think)... so an extra £200 for swapping in a new R&P isn't too bad really!!
I've looked fella, gonna cost me about £600 surcharge if I buy new as haven't got a similar box to swap with.

I've used a 2l Bus with a three rib and a final drive change, they're good, just a tiny bit slower on acceleration compared with the 6 rib. I've also driven a 3 rib with a loooong 4th gear fitted, big gap between 3rd and 4th you need to have the motor to deal with it, mighty acceleration though. I've settled on a 6 rib with a long 4th as well, for me it's the best combination as I have the engine to pull it. It is splitting hairs though, ANY of the above are a great improvement over a stock 1600 box.
Yours is a known entity I'd get that done. You could find a cheap 6 rib and when they split it, find you've got another £600 in parts to get. (Ask me how I know)
