Possibly. I was only talking to a mate recently and he was saying he had no retainer springs on his 72. I couldn't really say he should or shouldn't tbh.

  5. The empi's I had on my van were on it when I bought it, so I don't know about the stud length. I sold them to @1050Ron and as far as I'm aware he's bolted them straight on his bus.

My sisters got em on her 72 bay, iv'e had em on and off a loads of times, not a problem

  7. Just tried mine 8 1/2 turns on the front and 9 1/2 on the rear. Mine are 90s copies which I believe were Midland Wheels.

  8. Is your bus seriously lowered ? Could be just rubbage ?

I wasn't exagerating when I said 2-3 turns so there must be different avaliable. These had been fitted by a well known local lowering establishment. Cool!

  10. wasnt aware of that - wrong profile tyre then!

  11. I believe you I checeked mine in case Id conveniently forgotten they were hanging on by a wing and a prayer.

Standard nuts are same thickness as their size i.e. an m14 is 14mm thick (wheel nuts are thicker) 1.25 thread pitch = 10/11 turns for a full nut worth.
It's a problem with fancy chrome domes nuts as you cannot see how far on they are.

  13. Ok,
Been under it,,, with a torch,,, & @ no point is the tyre or wheel touching anything it shouldn't be.
The Van is lowered, but I don't see what difference that makes tho as my previous wheels & tyres were the same size.
    Cheers

  14. ^this (to digress slightly). VW deleted the springs in later Bays.

I have seen quite a few 72 with no retainer clips. why only 72's? reason they had none from factory see diagram and modified spreader bar option on previous page.

  16. may have missed something on the thread, but have you taken your empi's off and bolted the original wheels back on - is it still binding then?

May be a coincidence, but my brakes did exactly the same thing, just started binding when day when I got it out of the garage - it was on my splitty rear drums, but I assume it would be a similar set up.

Turned out to be the rear flexi hose had collapsed internally - outside looked fine - replaced it and all was good again.

If brakes still bind with old wheels back on and cable looks ok, worth trying flexi hose on the side that's binding.

  17. I suggested putting the originals back on on page 1. He probably just hasnt got round to it yet!

  18. Thanks for everyone's advice & help.
I'm actually back at work today but hopefully tonight I will get it sorted.
Had a call from another Late Bay Bud today & he's Sussed it,,, we think.
I'll try his suggestion later & let you know. :)

  19. Eh???
