VW designed the syncro with a cyclonic pre-filter before the main element. On the wbx the main element is in a plastic circular-ish box like our square FI housings and the cyclone sits inline between the snorkel and the filter housing. On the diesel the element is in a metal cylinder which has the cyclone incorporated into the cylinder end. After approx 1000miles on the new TDi I thought I'd have a look at the diesel cyclone collector and see how much and what it had caught before the main element... I was quite surprised to be honest. That's normal driving. No off road and bear in mind the snorkel is high up in the air flow. Heavy dust and a big bug amongst other crap. So, I've got the cyclone collector spare from the wbx to diesel conversion and wondered if it would fit on the bay system. It would need a bit of modifying but might be a fun exercise especially as the FI inlet cone points towards the fan. Worth it, or pointless waste of time? Wbx cyclonic dust collector... It would fit with a small extension to the overall intake length...with the end chopped off the trumpet and a joiner piece
OMG forgot about this thread...so fitted this and ran with it all summer! I think I have neglected an update...which of course leads into how much sh1te we've prevented from hitting the air filter and whether or not fuel consumption or engine temps have increased due to increasing the intake length. And of course if it's worth developing into a full intake snorkel to pull in cool clean air from the side vents as T3 does...
Unless it really strangles the air flow there should be no difference to fuel consumption and there definitely wont be any change to engine temperatures. You could fit a bilge pump into it and make a supercharger. Maybe.
Quick job this afternoon. We've been running Scanstrut bits in the T3s for a while and Ive decided to stick one in the bus. Designed for the marine market these locking ball jointed Rokk Mini mounts are fab. This one is the mobile one, but they also do a clip on mount for tablets for navigation, watching movies in the back etc etc. Modular and with a variety of base fixings from self adhesive, mechanically screwed in and glass suction they hold the appliance solidly. 4 more holes in the dash, but I'm beyond worrying about that
I've got an olde style sat nav, it amuses me because I never update the map - keeps you on your toes.
Me too…. The avatar of the car is a beetle and if you hit some bypasses or recent housing developments it shows you driving across fields! adds some fun to the journey! I should get out more!
I'll probably upset someone with this unadulterated use of a hacksaw now. Anyway, chatting with @MR SAM HODSON this morning regarding inlet filtration and CFMs and filters an 'tings and I thought I'd better tidy up my bodge on the cyclone filter! Bit of measuring and hacking.... Bit of 3 inch X 60mm i.d silicon hose with screws to help prevent the filter firing into the belt.. Et voila...test drive across to @pkrboo s tomorrow to have a play with the steering. Dust and general uncleanliness for patina and to blend in with the rest...and coz I couldn't be bothered. I'm taking a break from cleaning
I like my buses to be all finished and spotless if possible. But just the once, one day, one week, however long it lasts. After that the level of "clean" takes a plunge.
I know! I still haven't cleaned the engine bay from the work we had done on the body and you know how much mess that makes! I'll get it done. It's usually something I do when pottering about travelling tbh. Life seems such a rush outside of that
The day before Stanford Hall I decided to change the plugs and found the lead to number 2 was showing its age A bit worn and a bit cracked These are aged Bosch leads so following on from @Marty SmartyCat thread recently I had to practise what I preached about supporting suppliers to the VW scene who actually think about what we need and purchased a set of Brickwerks leads. Sorry @Lasty but needs must and @Zed ...we were right! The king lead is massive. Here's wot I did find this afternoon after FedEx dropped me package...
