Just purchased one of these. Set it so the green light just comes on. I've then popped the cap on with Number 1 lead where the rotor arm points then 2/3/4 Counter clockwise. Got it to run but only when I rotate the distributor right round and no where near my timing light. Probably something simple, but the battery just gave up on me so will resume tomorrow
How did you determine the position for setting no 1 timing? Mark on pulley? Was it no 1 on the compression stroke (could be on exhaust stroke)?
I'm surprised. If it ran ok why turn it around for the timing light. Probably would have been a static timing point that you would have been able to adjust more accurately with your strobe. That is how I did it straight out of the snazzy packaging.
I turned it until the rotor arm was pointing at the notch on the old distributor towards number 1 cylinder and the pully had my tdc mark on it. I then removed it and fitted the 123. I statically timed this so the light just came on.
Only got my timing light out when it failed to run. I'm probably just being stupid and it's something simple
Sorry l missed the point. Personally I'd take it out and start again making sure everything is at TDC.
If it's any consolation the first time I tried to fit one of these I also could not get it to work. To this day I don't know what I was doing wrong or if it was faulty. Customer sent it back. My own one just fired up straight away. I honestly don't think I was doing anything different.
Do that. Stick your old dissy back in, time it up and check whether the engine runs, all leads are in right order, etc Then chuck the 123 in exactly the same. No reason why it shouldn't fire straight up
If the battery was really really knackered it may have been affected by low voltage. If you can afford a 123 you can afford a new battery too.
Just check that the leads are in the right order - firing order is 1432, clockwise ( or 1234 anti clock as you say) - easy to swap one by mistake - ask me how I know.
Ok I've reset everything, and I'm pleased to say it's all working now. Not sure why it wasn't working but all good now
