Hi guys hope your all enjoying the nice weather, I just realised I didn't post any pics of the dirty bit round the back so thought I'd add on and also another with the question is this right and if not whys it been done?
You won’t be for long, the gear stick adjustment is something that has baffled a few more experienced owners on here!
There should be a connecting pipe here, rather than looped around like yours is…. Mine looks like this (albeit with the oil filler 180 degrees rotated) but I’ve not got that extra ‘spigot’ underneath where someone has created your looping effect for no good reason! See if you can get a replacement oil filler neck and connect it properly? Weld up the lower bit and connect it properly? Maybe there is a good reason…. Someone who knows far better than I will be along shortly though, I’m sure.
Aaaaaaah! In that case, just connect it properly to the oil bath air cleaner, and get a pipe off the bottom spigot and .... (at this point my knowledge runs out as I haven't got that bit!)
Yeah I've seen a few pics dotted about of engine bays and some have a pipe leading up and also one leading down through the tin work, just as I'm only a newbie didn't know if I should try and reinstate it or leave as is????
I like the way that there are two hoses looped back on themselves. Sarah @scrooge95 spotted the breather hose - basically the bit under the oil filler stays blocked. I think the oil filler is the same on quite a few cars so its still available without the spigot pointing down . In the original Beetle/pre 72 ish version, oil would drip out of a rubber hose pointed down that had a valve on the end to just let oil drip. In fact what that was changed to was just sucking the oily air back into the air cleaner where @scrooge95 pointed out it should go. The other hose loop is more subtle - the connection to the rear of the carburettor is joined to the inlet manifold below the carburettor. Basically block off the connection to the rear of the carburettor, and connect the side of the manifold connection over to the spare spigot sticking up on top of the air cleaner over to the right - I think @scrooge95 has a nice bright picture of where the hose goes .
Your bus is registered about 75 or 76. So that down pipe would have gone away a few years before. So the bit you want is more like this https://www.coolairvw.co.uk/product/113115451c/ .. not in stock at the moment.. but the cap and the fixing nut and seal will work from your existing filler. In the short term, I would search around for something like a silicone hose end blanking cap and clamp that on underneath as being neater, then get a hose to run across to the air cleaner.
Has anyone mentioned the blue cable that’s come out of the oversized yellow crimp. looks like the PO liked to loop everything
Ha ha ha don't get me started on the electrics there's a alarm on it that's been decomissioned wires everywhere and I darent remove any just incase I set it off
Don't touch any thing unless it doesn't go wrong. And in the first place always check the earth is grounding properly before any further exploration.
And , is that a plastic or metal fuel filter in the engine bay, I would relocate that under the van somewhere.
