Here to pick some brains !

  1. It must also have an electric pump fitted

  2. At the moment, the hose on the carb is…unusual. Disconnect one end or the other, plug the unused one and connect the remaining hose end to the thermostatic valve on top of the air box. Use new hose, as yours is looking ratty and may be causing an air leak.

  3. What is that strange mound of fluffy stuff at the base of the inlet manifold?

  4. looks like the remains of some insulation wrap

  5. It looks like exhaust wrap which makes me wonder if the preheat pipes are blocked
Was a previous owner trying to cure carb icing

That looks wrong to me that is where the tank breather pipe should enter the carb, but unless it’s just the picture I can’t see any tank breather pipes for it to come off!

  7. Can't really leave it as it is, as you've got no real crankcase ventilation.

Also...where is your electric fuel pump? You're missing the mechanical one.

  8. Thought I’d seen Gusbus around here

I really should remember where I put this photo and store it somewhere sensible on my PC for future use.... once the twin carbs get fitted, it won't look all 'stock' anymore (slightly sad about that!)
I'll see if I can find it, hang on......

    EDIT: here ya go….

Before it all goes, I'll clean up the bright 0range hoses and get a decent photo for future use. Shame the engine bay looks so shabby

@scrooge95 's picture showing the crank case breather hose going from the oil filler to the side of the air cleaner, also shows the fuel tank breather hose connection (orange tube) that comes down from the T piece high up at the back of the engine bay.

Basically - no crank case breather , your engine will spit oil from behind the pulley as that is the only place that gases can go without the breather connected.
    - disconnected fuel tank breather , it will stink of petrol. Theres also a set of short hoses joining metal tubes that rot away in the breather pipework. If they crack up, one of them will drip petrol under the spare wheel well.

Both of these hoses are returned to the air cleaner down stream of a little weighted flap, that ensures there is a slight vacuum to suck all the smelly oily stuff from the crank case through the pool of oil in the oil bath air cleaner, and the petrol vapour straight into the carburettor air feed.

  15. Right quick update, I've sorted the oil filler breather pipe the fuel vapour pipes are ordered and she's had a full service and timming done and full check over at a classic vehicle place near me, the result is amazing it's like a different bus picks up quicker and sits all day at 50 with no effort,! . Also the only faults they could find were a bush, and needing a new hub nut and 10 wheel nuts!!
