Hi all, I’ve done this loads of times adjusting the tappets but recent adjustments I have noticed the screw on number 2 exhaust is screwd out a lot? Compared to the rest? ( I think it’s exhaust rh side closest to the rear) I have trouble getting the feeler gauge under the screw. any thoughts ta!
That means taking things apart in the engine. Nope. Could it be wearing? Or worn? Just rewiring house at moment, so swmbo would prefer me to stick with that at the moment I’m guessing lol. Any quick way of checking?
It was only a thought as I think you can get "cut to length" pushrods so maybe one is a bit too long? But yes you would have to take the rockers off to take the push rods out.
Yes - as the valve recesses into the head, the stem comes further out. To compensate, you need to back the adjusting screw further out Head will need to come off sooner rather than later
How does the valve recess further, isn't it held by the valve seat in the head? Or is it time I got some sleep? Edit: Ah, seat - I was thinking if the stem guides. Night night
Care needed as if the valve seat becomes loose it can get ugly Have a read here https://ratwell.com/technical/Heads.html
Ooh not good, this is gonna have to wait for further inspection. What’s the remedy head off Replace valve? Sorry I’m tired as well and can’t find me glasses to read the rat well stuff lol
Yep. Its wear and tear that needs looking at. If the valve stem tip stands proud of the other three, metal is burnt away. Check with the rockers off and a straight edge. For one thing you lose power from that cylinder on the way, and in the worst case the bits that can break off lead to more expense up to totalling the engine. If its just receding valve seats thats sort of gradually progressive, but the loose valve seat is a sort of lottery on what happens in the chain reaction each time the cylinder fires. Spend time and money now to save more later.
^^^ This doesn’t take long to whip the rockers off & put a steel ruler across the top of the valve steams to see if one is higher than the others.
Job for today then while it’s not raining. Just been looking for new parts and it seems type 4 1800 stuff is getting hard to come by. Just got a new awning as well bloody typical!
No, just unbolt the rocker gear, but if one adjuster screw is further out than the others and you can no longer get a feller gauge in you already know what the answer is. Catch it now and you’ll avoid further damage, leave it and it could be catastrophic. If your heads are ‘big valve’ there’s one for sale on Vzi https://www.volkszone.com/threads/type-4-1-8-large-valve-s-head.1599934/
