I think the Canaries tend to produce lava flows and lots of ash but not the horrific burning clouds.

 

The New Zealand volcanoes are the ash and pumice type but past eruptions like Mount Tarawera in the 1880's buried an entire village miles away and the very recent White Island eruption killed several tourists crazy enough to venture close to the boiling water and hot ash explosion. The central part of the North Island is still also active and the whole area is a high plateau of ash and pumice and very interesting. We went to the top of Mount Egmont but felt uneasy even though its been quiet for a long time. So hot ash toxic gases and pumice can be worse than molten rock flows.

You can use Google Earth and Maps/street view to get views of the area. Worth a look.

 

There's a village in Wales called Mountain Ash - its not a mountain and there's no ash there.
