Not to mention that adding the pipes, filter and cooler increases you oil capacity (by a litre or so?) and starting from the tiny stock 2.5L that is a very good thing.

I find the fens pretty dull to be honest.. as you say, sunsets and stars is about the highlight! Still, steep hills and fantastic views probably become boring once the novelty wears off..

  4. No, you’re wrong ;). Living in the flat, windswept Fens would drive me insane.

Yes, there is 3.5 litres in the system with an oil cooler and a big filter and all that pipework. Which is good enough for a 15 mile dash before it finally gets hot - leaving Southampton, the oil temperature takes until north of Winchester to really max out.

I was trying really hard with my 1641 to see how hot it got on a hot day . On the run back from Techenders, when I got it all very hot, 115C oil/130C CHT, I was taking a lowly 1641 up hills at 50 gps MPH (going up to the Ridgeway on the A34 from the north) and seeing oil temperatures that would have been translated into a real worry without an oil cooler. Out on the flat, 70-75 MPH was beckoning.. AFR was around 12.5:1-13:1 when pushing hard, going up to 16:1 cruising along at 65 mph on the flat.

Makes me think that it gets easier and easier to overcome the cylinder head cooling on a T1 style engine, just pushing hard on a 1641. More power and you are overwhelming the cooling if you dont watch it. This is also with an engine running stock gearing - the optimal cooling is about 4000-4100 RPM, basically in that 65-70 MPH band .

Fit a freeway flier or big off road wheels and you become unable to cool the heads properly at speed.

I also wonder whether people worrying about oil buildup in cylinder heads, fitting breathers and other such constructions are missing the point - that lake of oil in the head is absorbing heat from the heads and helping even out hot spots, and as it runs back to the sump, its helping carry heat away from the heads.

The cooling system on the Type 4 moves about 25% more air, and does not max out before more like 5000 RPM so scream a T4 and it will stay cool.

Once upon a time, when I was a young engineer, I went to apply for a job at ARM Ltd. The trip across the windswept fens to the overpriced city of Cambridge was an eye opener. The noise of a load of empty plastic plant tubs thundering around in the wind on the flat roof above the interview room put me off even more.

I went back to my job at Philips and decided it wasnt worth it.

Going back to T2D more recently reminded me why I like hills.

    Yeah but….err… erm…. no, I’ve got nothing.

Oh, actually, I can think of one positive, we don’t need handbrakes.

  8. I did a few months contracting in St Ives - slightly closer to civilisation - and I don't think I've ever really recovered from it...

I drove through it once, didn’t really notice any civilisation..

  11. Remember driving back from Rob P’s place @zedders after picking up my engine. Stopped in the countryside for a break: looking west, you could just about see the glow of London. Look east and there was…nothing. Just blackness. Like a black hole…

Wisbech and the surrounding area is grim indeed. The whole area is an industrial farm. It looked black because there really is... nothing... or so little habitation "in the countryside", it's almost all in villages and towns. It hasn't always been like that, at one time it was teeming with people. There is a road from Littleport to Mildenhall that was legendary for having 100 pubs in 10 miles or something like that. People must have walked to those 100 locals and lived close by. Now it's just a road through enormous fields with a few agri businesses and about ten houses.

  14. That makes me feel confident on it mike, thanks. The guys who fitted it did a pretty good job by the looks, so good its almost impossible to get it off for a clean but sure it will come off with patience.

Too true, coming off the m5 after travelling down from a flat A38 from Derby then Flat ish m42 then M5 ..a shock to the system after Exeter ...but it manages :)

  16. Youve put me right off fen country guys, sounds like the sort of place you might go through on a speedboat quickly. Cornish lanes can be the stuff of nightmares though if you have to stop and pull away on a 1 in 10...i always carry what we call the handbrake stone these days too after parking on some of the steep lanes. A big lump of rock we jam under the front wheel. Never a dull moment.

Naturally it would be water with a few tiny islands dotted about in the reeds and lots and lots of mud which is now Fen black soil. I suppose it's better than that.
It shrinks when drained. So everything ends up banked up and dug deep. This much.

Fortunately it's not on the way to anywhere so most are spared. A17. Say no more.

  19. I used to live in surrey and bekshire before we moved down here to Dartingyon in south devon. Its like being on proper holiday for the whole summer- wonderful beaches like bantham 20 mins away for surf, evening swims after work in the dart and rolling contryside and green hills. They'll have to carry me out or take me to portugal (maybe)...

Slacken off the case bolts just above and just below the oil pump, then it will come out easier. Dont forget to tighten them later.
